Marakele info

Unread post by !bushbaby » Mon Jan 25, 2016 8:26 pm

We will be visiting Marakele Tlopi camp for the first time next week and would like to find out from the very helpful forumites the following:-
- do they hire skottel braais at the picnic spots like at Kruger?
- is there a cell phone signal in the camp?
Many thanks.

Hi

No skottels for hire at the picnic spot.

Cell phone reception will be patchy at best.

No skottle hire - the park is very different to Kruger - much smaller, for one thing.

I can't remember about Tlopi specifically, but there is scattered cell reception throughout the park.

It is a lovely park and you will enjoy it.

A word of warning, though, - last time we stayed at Tlopi we had very bad monkey/baboon problems - they managed to get into the "monkey-proof" kitchen area and wreaked havoc! Turn the fridge round and don't leave any food visible or accessible.

Enjoy your trip - Marakele is really special!

Would be nice to have firsthand information about rainfall in the Park and how the veld is looking at the moment - so please post upon your return. :D

Marakele viewpoint

Is the tar road to the vulture viewpoint suitable for a camper van? We are renting in May, I've got lots of experience driving a camper.

The road is not suitable for a camper van. It is too steep and narrow. There are only a few spots where vehicles can pass each other. Here the one needs to park on the verge of the road while the other passes. A camper van is bound to be too large for this. I also think that the van may not be strong enough to handle the incline, especially given the maneuvers one may need to do.

I believe you will put your own safety and potentially those of other road users at risk if you were to try and climb the hill.

You can drive up to the foot of the hill, where there is a small dirt road which is a spot where you can turn around. But do not go further than that.

You may think that you have the skills, but also think of others.

Thank you for the advice, I will not try the road, when I first had a camper van 20 years ago I tried a road I should not have and had a long way to reverse!
