HoepHoep, thanks for this info. It is the most beautiful place I agree.

Wild@Heart, you are right, they say it will be finished end of May, but they also say it will take 8 months, and I didn't saw any action as yet. Time will tell.
This is enough reason to go:

snorkel trail in park?

Unread post by BunnyL » Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:51 pm

Hello all -

I read somewhere that there was one (or more) underwater snorkel trails in Tsitsikamma. We are avid snorkelers and will be bringing out snorkel gear with us when we leave for South Africa on Feb 6. We will be in the Tsitsikamma area near the end of February. Could anyone give me more information about snorkeling here (or in Knysna or elsewhere as appropriate)?

Also, is the water very cold? We have think nylon skins that we will likely bring (more for sun and jellyfish protection than anything else) but no wet suits. Will Feb water temps be good for swimming?

Thanks for any information you can give us.

Best,
Bunny;

Hi Bunny, I know you leave next week  and I will try and get an answer for you. I think the water will probably be warmer than what you are used too, but its still fairly cool, but refreshing, some years its colder than others though.

The sea at Storms River in summer can be at 18 degrees the one day and 10 degrees the next, depends on the weather .

Hi BunnyL,

We hope to have the Regional Coordinator for Tourism answer your question soon, i.e. before you leave for SA... :)

HI BunnyL,

A message from Rassie Erasmus:

The weather and sea temperature during February is normally nice. The sea temp is around 15 degrees but it can change very quickly depending in wind conditions and become very cold - 10 degrees.

Wetsuits can be hired at the beach should it be needed as well as snorkelling gear. The only area to snorkel is in the sea at the restaurant beach area.

I would advise that the park is phoned the morning after 09:00 on the day they would like to come and snorkel to find out what the conditions are unless if they will be staying in the park.

So, can I reasonably expect the suspension bridge(s) to be rebuilt and 'open' by my visit in late July?

Sorry to hear about the suspension bridge not being ready for our visit. Thanks to all who have replied
Still we will enjoy the ferry ride. Do I have to book? We have a group of 16.

Hi Ossie

The boat ride now leaves from below the restaurant in front of the dive shop. I'm not quite sure if it can take 16 people, I suggest you e-mail Tsitsikamma. I don't think it is necessary or possible to book right now, but do get your tickets as early as possibly when you arrive in the park. They can be bought from the dive shop below the restaurant.

It sux that the trail to the suspension bridge is still closed. I am in the tourism industry and I know that a lot of people are very disappointed when they get to the park and find that they can't walk to the bridge.

I went down to camp at Natures Valley a couple of weeks back and chatted to a guy that works the info office at the Storms River Bridge and he said apparently a lot of tour vehicles turn around at the gate when they find out that the trail is still closed. It does not matter what the explanation is for the trail not being repaired yet, it is bad for tourism.
