Best Route from CT to MZNP

Unread post by Caracal » Thu Jan 19, 2017 8:15 pm

Hi everybody.
I am currently planning a quick trip to MZNP. Can anybody tell me which is the best route to take from Cape Town to MZNP.
Thank you
Caracal

I usually go via Beaufort West (N1) and then via Aberdeen and Graaf-Reinet, but always with a stopover en route. I don't know if it's longer or shorter to take the N2 via PE, I think that it would be equally long, but you could stop over at Tsitsikama? MZNP is always (IMO  ) worth the effort, but it's a LONG drive from Cape Town. But if you have someone to share the driving then perhaps it's doable without a stopover. One of my favourite parks!

Thx for that info Arks... we were contemplating going via Route 62 to Oudtshoorn but yes I think we will go via Beaufort West. I guess other routes are more scenic but probably longer. :)

Just beware of the long road between BW and Aberdeen, possibly the most boring road in all of SA. And if you're planning on a stopover, I'd suggest the Drodsty in Graaf-Reinet, which has a superb restaurant. I had two memorable meals there in 2015.

We haven't driven from Cape Town to MZNP but we did drive from MZNP to Beaufort West last year.
That stretch of road is excellent with minimal traffic.
From BW we headed north towards Upington & on that short stretch of the N1 (before the N12 turnoff) there were a lot of heavy trucks heading to Joburg.
I point this out because the N1 appears to be the major truck route from CT.
If you go along the N2, you can also visit Addo. MZNP is about 3 hours from Addo on great roads.

I agree that the road is excellent and has little traffic, but it is IMO very BORING, which for me can make driving difficult as the monotony puts me to sleep .... So I just wanted Michele to be aware of that :)

Thx again everybody for the help. We only have 4 nights in MZNP. if we can leave in the afternoon the day before we will probably stay over at Laingsberg somewhere. Otherwise we drive straight through..and we will definitely be driving back in one go so I reckon the route via BW is the quickest and easiest to drive. I can help Doug with the driving if need be so we should be fine doing the trip in one go.
So now for my next question....where can I find the Black-footed Cat, Aardwolf , Genets and Aardvark...I want photos of them...all of them.

A must "to do" is the cheetah walk - very rewarding.
The aardwolf we saw on a night drive with Dan. He seems to know where to find them.
We saw one on the side of the main road at the intersection with the Ubejane loop.
Just so happened that Dan also found an aardvark but was too far away to get a shot.

Haven't had any luck with the blackfooted cat....yet.

Just a warning - its a long, long drive. In Sept it took us 5 hours to get from Cape Town Airport to BW. Then another 3 hours BW to Graaf Reinet (and that road really is boring), then another 3 hours from GR to MZNP. We stayed over in Karoo and Camdeboo so that broke it up for us and I am really glad we did. Not sure what its like now but there were 3 Stop and Gos on the N1 and another 3 between GR and MNZP, 10 minute stop each time if you caught them wrong. And watch out for the variable speed cameras on the N1 - there's usually a police road block coming into BW and the police have handheld computers with speed times and registration numbers.
