Cheetahs in Addo

Unread post by lilowen » Sun Apr 19, 2015 12:47 pm

I posted a message yesterday but did not insert the subject name. Sorry.
I see that it is said that Cheetahs are not endemic to the Addo region/park. I have also seen that Springbok and Nyala are also not endemic.
How is this worked out whether they are endemic or not. Is there somewhere where one can read up on what is endemic to specific regions.

Hi Lionel

Remember that Addo covers a large area of land and incorporates five biomes. Springbok and cheetah occurred in large numbers north of the Zuurberg, This does not mean that these animals did not make it south of the Zuurberg mountain range.

The Nyala is exotic to the area and historically occurred in KZN and further north. These animals are either caught or culled in certain circumstances.

Reference would be the follow book: Historical incidence of large land mammals in the Border, Western and Northern Cape, by CJ Skead.

I hope this goes some way towards answering your questions.
