  Intially they ate us bankrupt. A lettuce a day. But then we weaned them off lettuce, and now they even mow the lawn. A bargain indeed.  The LO likes a taste of a delicious flower here and there too. Yellow's his colour.  But sometimes red and pink too.

The burping is LOUD!  First time I heard it, I gave the Oom a filthy look. I thought he has lost his manners.  It is a burp like no other - equal in intensity and noise to that of a Schwarzenegger or someone in a movie. Kid you not. And no, no liquor, pure lettuce juice.

ag you have trained them well!! This LO sounds like a bit a pansy to be honest  Only going for colours that suits his sense of fashion  Then again ... in defense of his masculinity ... he does pick fights with a big brute!

   I would love to hear your tortoise burping: "I will be back!" An acting talent that only a staple diet of lettuce juice could provide 8)

Going to instruct  the Oom to follow the BO around for the next few days, making sound recordings of his 'I'll-urp-be-urp-back-burps'!

The LO has a sense for the finer things in life. You are right!

I can just imagine how the 'oom' wil react to such an instruction  Its OK the 'oom' will understand the value of the exercise once BO is famous for his "I'll-urp-be-urp-back" line. 8) Head star in the animal kingdom big stage production!

Then every Schwarzenegger movie has a point where the maiden is in the midst of great danger! And Arnold instructs her to get to safety whilst he takes on 100 baddies! And somehow there is always a helicopter as an escape route :? Which means BO will have another famous line: "get-urp-to-urp-the- urp-chopper". The maiden in distress can be LO

The LO will be super in this role. He always seems a wee bit in distress.   May we dress 'him' in yellow?

And we can get BO another line - 'Hasta-urp-la-urp-vista-burp, baby-urp'.

:funny:

LO will be in a right amount of distress in 'his' yellow dress   8) It rhymes because its true! While a close up of LO's distressed face takes up the foreground, dramatic a violent lighting strikes will blitz the sky behind 'him'.

Just then Tortoise Shwarzenneger makes a decision to save the day!! And burps his final threat to the baddies: "Hasta-urp-la-urp-vista-urp-baby"! And mows them down! A skill he learnt exercising on your garden

Ready for more tortoise-action? Now picture this....

-----

The scene is set. The backdrop is a lush, plush, green fertilised lawn... It is silent. Perhaps too silent? :hmz:

Then, there is an ever so slight rustle in the leaves. Something moves behind a rain forest fern...

The next moment, there is a helluva commotion as two tortoises streak across the lawn.

The Commander (BO) is running after LO, whilst throwing axes at him (the axes are in his camouflaged Ninja Turtle backpack). BO lets rip a scream of anger and irritation: "Who-urp-is-urp-your-urp-daddy-burp, and-urp-what-burp-does-urp-he-do-burp?"

The LO in distress in the yellow dress with the high pitched voice and poise has a sudden total recall and quips over 'her' shoulder: “Consider that a divorce”.

This takes the BO a lil' by surprise. So, using thermal imaging, he finds another target. Whilst strangling a nearby snail with a barb wire, BO says: "What-urp-a-bur-pain-in-urp-the-neck-burp!"

Elzet wrote:Great video, Ossendrywer.

IMO these are two male tortoises from different species, and one is under attack of the other 'territorial' male.

The big bloke is a Sulcata Tortoise: The African Spurred Tortoise and the other a Southern Leopard Tortoise. (I might be wrong, though). :hmz:

This is a rather old thread I dug up from the archives - unfortunately I have not seen it before.

I can assure you that both tortoises on the video clip are Leopard Tortoises - Geochelone pardalis (Bergskilpaaie in Afrikaans). The one is just much older than the other. This is very typical behaviour of the bigger males trying to bully the opposition out of its way. Mating starts in a very similar way, but sometimes the male will even roll the female over a few times before mating actually starts (not always). I have witnessed this behaviour many times during my visits to the park. I once reached the semi-finals of a video competion on a local Afrikaans TV channel with the mating behaviour of Leopard Tortoises (all "filmed" in the caravan park of Karoo National Park).

Just another interesting thing about the leopard tortoises in the park. During the middle of the day of the hot summer months, they stop grazing and seek for shade. It is then that they move in underneath of vehicles and gets injured regularly when people don't look under their vehicles before they drive off. That's the reason why notices are put up to warn people about the tortoises under the vehicles. I personally had such a bad experience.

I attach two photos of a specific Leopard Tortoise that came for some shelter to our caravan's rally tent every midday. Different to when they sleep at night, and pull in their heads and feet, they lie "flat on their tummies" during the heat of the day with their heads and feet totally exposed.

Lastly also a photo of the mating that takes place with a lot of noise (the very same male that came to visit us under our veranda every day over Christmas/New Year).

Thanks for bringing this delightful thread back to life Stoffel. !!

That skilpad really looks totally relaxed under your verandah - I think he would have liked you to leave the verandah there for the whole summer. Can imagine that the mating could be quite noisy

Really missing those mites who don't post anymore :(

How interesting Stoffel! I never knew that Leopard Tortoises don't pull their heads and feet in when sleeping during the heat of the day! He looks very comfortable and at home in the shade of your tent! Thanks for sharing this lovely experience!
