Greetings from Mountain Zebra!

My name is Charl Lyell and I have taken over from Michael. I will keep you updated on news and activities sightings in the Park.

The Park is looking as beautiful as ever after very good rains and the winter seems to be knocking on the door! We have had very good cheetah sightings with several kills and the lions are also often seen on drives.

Also check out the topics on the cheetah and lions in the Park.

Till next time!
Charl

Hi all!

Yes, Roberto, I did receive your photos of the male lions thank you. Sure I sent you a reply.

The male lions are moving all around the Park and have been seen very regularly by guests and several times on game drives. We are doing a sunset drive during the winter and came across the 2 males last week Sunday just waking up from their afternoon siesta. They walked in front of us in the road and then stumbled upon a large herd of 50 buffalo coming for a drink near the Ubejane loop.

It was after sunset and the males started their hunting strategy. They waited for the entire herd to pass by and then chased and caught an adult buffalo after losts of dust and noise. The buffalo made a distress call and the entire herd turned around and chased the lions of the victim. The lions ended up empty handed after chasing the buffalo for a while longer! It was an amazing sighting and the guests could not believe their luck!

It was good to see the buffalo are starting to fight back!
Go buffalo!

Hi everyone!

If anybody has some good photos of the cheetah at Mountain Zebra NP and know which ones they saw (maybe told during a cheetah tracking drive or by a staff member), or even if you don't know, I would appreciate some to make a cheetah ID guide for visitors to the Park.

Preferably front and side photos, of the animal walking, sitting or lying. Walking or in an upright position is the best. The approximate location and date seen could also help us with the ID. This will also help us to know in which area the cheetah are, if seen by guests and will enhance the experience of visitors to the Park as they can get some info on the cheetah they spotted.

Photos can be emailed to me at charl.lyell@sanparks.org

Much appreciated!
Charl

Hi everyone!

So, Mountain Zebra received the first bit of snow last week Thursday! This morning it was minus 3 degrees Celcuis but the days are lovely. People are seeing a lot of aardwolf and bat-eared foxes during the day now, so worth visiting the Park!

We had a very good sighting of Nixi, one of the older female cheetah, with her 4 cubs! We were walking alongside her for several hundred meters while she was scouting the area for some lunch. The cubs are getting used to people and very adorable!

Till next time
Charl

Hi all

The tourist activities have been very busy during the winter school holidays with some great sightings! Aardwolf and bat-eared foxes were regularly seen on game drives and by tourists doing self-drives, especially during the early and late afternoons.
Many buffalo groups seem to have moved into the mountains as there are more food and it is safer from the lions. We encountered many of these on the 3-day Impofu hiking trail in the middle of July. Morning temperatures dropped to well below zero, even to minus 6 degrees Celcius, but the days were lovely to hike and the views magnificent!
The lions are doing very well and were often seen by tourists. They have been traversing all over the Park. The Kranskop loop have been tarred and repaired and visitors can enjoy the mountain views once again on this route.
It is getting drier in the Park but it still has its winter charm. Days are getting longer and warmer so we hope for some early rains soon!

Hallo

Some very interesting things were seen on game drives and walks in the past few weeks! Some of these include: A caracal was observed hissing at a herd of eland from top of a large boulder; two brown hyena were seen on one night drive (very fortunate!!!); some bat-eared foxes chasing a caracal off; a black eagle caught a guinea-fowl; several good aardwolf sightings and even an aardvark during a night drive.

We saw an aardvark sunning itself on a cool winter morning near Salpeterkop. We tried to get a bit closer but it heard us and dashed into its hole! Some visitors also checked out the Anglo-Boer War chess board on top of Salpeterkop, with some stunning views of the Park and the surrounding Karoo landscape.

Hi all

We were fortunate to get some good snowfall during last night and today, which will help to replenish the fountains and streams! Also some nice views for visitors to the Park who can enjoy the snow from the newly resurfaced Kranskop loop road.

The buffalo are enjoying the safe haven of the mountains and still seem to be doing well.

Cheers from a cold and white Mountain Zebra Park :D

Hi there,

Just a Question, Apart from Cheetah, Brown Hayena an Lions. Does Leopards exist in MZN?
life is Game, you rather play or flee. I chose to play the Game.

No leopards in the park, I'm afraid, Malealea.

Hi all

Everything is going well in the Park, we are just hoping for some spring rains soon. The activities have been busy with regular good sightings of bat-eared foxes, aardwolf, springhares and the lot on night drives.

The cheetah tracking dished up some very fortunate sightings of kills being made and eaten, especially by one female with her four cubs! They are about 7 months old now and really playful and learning to kill and open up the prey themselves.

We saw the mom catch a young gemsbuck and also a springbuck on two of these game drives in the past 2 weeks. Also the cubs possibly catching their first animal (with some help from mom eventually...) - the unfortunate new-born springbuck did not have a chance.

Mom dragging a gemsbuck calf to the shade before starting to feed. The cubs also 'play kill' it while she takes a rest.
