I wonder if anyone has had the same experience we had on Saturday morning. After entering Addo just before the first water hole on the left we came across 2 hyaena in the road. We had a weird experience with them, fantastic as well as scary. The one hyaena was not as curious as his mate, he came right up to our windows and after scaring him, he would come right back. When we closed our windows his nose would touch, then tried to take a bite from the car mirror. This went on for some time. I have photo's but do not seem to get the loading correct. I have pics where the other hyaena was trying to bite another cars mirror - only interested in 2 white cars. We wondered if people have been feeding them..

Sounds like quite an experience hoyle!

I've not heard of that happening in Addo before. Were the mirrors those chrome mirror effect ones or just plain? I'll ask around a bit and see if anyone else has heard of it happening...

It's possible they have been fed but hyenas are very inquisitive animals and will bite anything. I suppose that if they can't smell it then they need to taste it to find out what it is.

There's a new BBC Wildlife program being aired at the moment from Zambia - they lost a number of their static cameras to hyenas.

A trick I learned from a guide up in Shingwedzi is to start the car engine and "rock" the car back and forth

Very interesting indeed, but also scary as you said Hoyle! I suppose they can crush those mirrors with those strong jaws very easily. Great pictures! Thanks for sharing!

1 Hyena seen at Carols rest:

Pic is on Instagram at this link: https://www.instagram.com/p/BI-2q4SDCWvl3cc4NZlIc6Wd3y9Mr3N4mOidRk0/

1 hyena seen on multiple days, seems to stay alone and lays behind the dam in the donga. Best time to see it is between 6:45am -7:20am when the first car passes, it walks away.
