Kgalagadi: Walks and drives

Unread post by mistral » Thu Jan 09, 2014 11:34 pm

Could anyone please update me on sunset/night drives and walks available at Twee Rivieren during October.
Any idea of scheduled times and costs.

Hi Mistral,

The Kgalagadi Tariff List are here, have a look at the bottom for tariffs on walks and drives.

During December I did a walk with the Bushmen in the park.
You book it directly with them at the bushman council office just down the road in Welkom and depending on your vehicle they can either pick you up at Twee Rivieren or you can meet them at their gate into the park.
You then drive out into the dunes for about 10minutes and do a walk for 2-3 hours.

Since it is a dune walk the probabilities of seeing large numbers of animals are low, but what you do get is a lesson in tracking and interpreting the environment. You will also learn about plants and other things important to the bushmen.

The highlight of our walk was finding pangolin spoor that was a day old :wall:

They take no weapons on these walks and reply only on knowledge

Never knew about the bushmen walks!

Good info - thank you.

So they have their own gate into the Park??

Do they still hunt in the Park as is permitted?

They have a community gate that is about 10km along the southern fence. You turn left right before reaching the parks reception (as you approach) and drive down the road. It's pretty sandy and bump!

I know they are allowed to hunt on their land in the park but I think there are restrictions when they approach the Aoub river. However I have no idea if they do still actively hunt....something that you could ask them directly.

They do harvest medicinal plants and collect objects for their crafts (porcupine quills, ostrich eggs etc) and might well do this on a walk.

When we were there recently, there were no drives at Nossob because the Field Guide had moved to another SANParks park and there was no replacement.

I believe there were drives from Mata Mata and they could also pick guests up from Kalahari Tented Camp (we didn't know that and would have loved to go on a drive from KTC).

As far as I know, there are no drives from the Wilderness Camps (other than KTC).

I suggest, if you don't get any more replies here, you contact the park direct and ask them.

Have tried to book for KTC/ Mata Mata game drive but have been told that we need to do it closer to the time (it is under a month to go we will be there 21-23rd ). I think that this is because there are few people who can do it and it depends on their availability and they will only know their exact schedule the week before. Pity would like to have booked in advance.

Thanks for commenting blomflower. I thought it probably wasn't possible to book in advance but like you I was hoping I would be able to!

Hi Mez,

There are game drives operating from TweeRivieren and Mata-Mata. Please contact Robert.wylde@sanparks.org. and Ian.heynes@sanparks.org. to make bookings for TweeRivieren and Mata-Mata/KTC respectively.

Regards,
Nadia

Thanks so much Nadia, I will get in touch with them. Does mean there's nothing going from Nossob at the moment?

Yes Mez, It is only those two camps as mentioned by Nadia that have game drives  .
