Warona

Warona in Setswana which means Ours/For us.

I just received a great sighting from Andreas Schenke.
On the 3rd March just a few hundred metres north of the lower dune road turn off he spotted Warona coming out of a cave and along the calcrete ridge. He didn't see the Auchterlonie female but he heard they have been seen together. Here are a few of the photos he managed to get.

Kgalagadi Leopard identification

Unread post by jenand » Tue Mar 26, 2013 6:16 pm

ok. Here's a pic of the Auchterlonie female and Warona. Apologies it's not great, but they wouldn't come any closer or get out of the shade. (I waited for more than 2 hrs just to be able to get them in the same pic as it was)

So I have another exciting update.
It seems like all of last years cubs are coming out of the wood work. Warona the Auchterlonie females cub from December 2012 (http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=18567&start=720) has been seen recently with her mum at the Lower dune road turn off in the Aoub.
They were seen by Sean O'Hagen on the 6th August 2013 and we have him to thank for these great pictures.

As I said earlier I've been updating some pictures in the guide.
In particular I've been updating Warona's photos seeing as he is no longer a small cub. In doing so I found the following comparisons quite interesting and I thought I'd share them. The photos on the left are mine taken in December 2012 and the ones on the right are Sean O'Hagan's from August 2013.

You can see how the skull has changed shape quite a bit. Also the ear size is interesting.
Enjoy!

The Mongoose survived to tell the tale..with it's tail intact. :) As you can imagine we were thrilled with this sighting and I was even more thrilled when I realsied that I had managed to capture it as well. :)

Thanks Kesheshe....now that Rae has solved the mystery of Warona's sex (she's female) i don't need the high res shot of the 8th picture.
Just included fairly decent images from each sighting so that i can make positive IDs and include them in my database. File sizes of around 1Mb are ideal.
Cheers

Thank Son Godin!

She then walked up the ridge and all along the top before getting down and laying in a "cave"

She later lay down flat and it was getting "late" so we moved on. We spend quite some time there with her and not another car in sight!!

Posting the following on behalf of rjm:

Warona:
On the 26 October 2013 at around 3pm, rjm and the Auchterlonie female had a surprise meeting at the Blacksmith's pit at the Auchterlonie picnic site. After being within 6 feet of each other, they went their separate ways. The Auchterlonie female had been on a springbok kill.

The next day, at around 5pm, rjm got the following pix at the picnic site:

Warona:

(the pic above - I cropped and lightened a bit to show Warona's markings)

Warona - 12 November 2013 19H02

3.5 Km south of Auchterlonie

We were driving back to Kieliekrankie after spending some time at a lion kill south of Kamfersboom.

We saw a Springbok wo did not like what he saw and or smelled!! We could at first not see what he obviously saw!!

Then we spotted the leopard high in a tree next to the road.

Image

She was not comfy up there and then turned round to have a good look at us!!

Moments later she jumped down

We got one final look before she disappeared over the ridge
