Kgalagadi: Construction and Maintenance

Unread post by barryels » Fri Aug 21, 2015 4:24 am

Construction
There is currently construction work underway at Kieliekrankie and Urikaruus Wilderness Camps due to the building of one additional unit at each camp. At Kieliekrankie construction work will take place behind the current units on the right hand side of the parking area and at Urikaruus the additional unit will be built away from the four units towards the back of unit number one. These construction sites will be properly fenced off to minimise any unnecessary discomfort. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Construction work will commence at Nossob during August 2015 with the development of new riverfront chalets and luxury camping sites as well as the replacement of the camping site ablution facility. According to planning the construction work will take place over a period of 14 months. We apologise for any inconvenience caused

In addition to the above, inspections of the following wilderness camps resulted in that major renovations will take place during 2016 and that the wilderness camps will be closed down during the following dates:

Urikaruus – 15 Mei 2016 till 15 Junie 2016
Grootkolk – 14 Junie 2016 till 14 Julie 2016
Gharagab – 15 Julie 2016 till 31 Aug 2016
Bitterpan – 11 Januarie till 31 Januarie 2016

Has the 'construction' work at Nossob Begun?

Has the water scarcity issue been addressed?

We stayed at Nossob on 4 September. Roads to the 2 new entrances have been laid. There were construction vehicles and equipment being stored in the airplane hanger off the runway. No evidence yet of construction having started on any of the new accommodation. We did not see or hear any construction for the night we were there...bearing in mind it was a Friday.

Hi Jo,

Where will the new entrances be? I've seen 2 different plot plans. One with the new access road running behind the camp pass the swimming pool and another EIA BAR report shows it entering near the non-power point campsites and the chalets on the south with the exit not moving much.

The replacement of the camping site ablution is also a big worry. That construction will take place in the campsite and what facilities will remain?

I've asked these questions in another post, but no reply yet. :hmz:

Hi BB

We just stopped in at KTP for 2 nights and it was really quiet both river valleys....the very chilly cold front had just passed through so we think a lot of game moved into the warmer dunes.

SG....what I think will be the new south gate is.....if you are standing by the petrol pumps looking towards the hide/river bed, there are some parking bays that are half covered in front of you.....the gate is to the right of them. So it's almost in line with the start of the chalets at number 1. I did not physically see the gate for the north entrance but I could see where the road from the new gate meets the current "north " road.....approximately 200m up (north) of the hide. I think the gate is somewhere along the area that the little walking trail goes through inside in camp

There was no activity around the Ablution block while we were there

Interesting plots Son Godin, thanks for posting.
I'd not realised that there was a newer EIA that responded to some questions.

I wonder if anyone from SANParks can comment on why the information listed under KTP in the EIA part of this website is so sparse?
http://www.sanparks.org/groups/eia_notices/

All that is there is the original Notice from 2012. Surely all the future EIAs and addenda should also be accessible there?

Thanks for that very useful link Son Godin. I found the EIA's somewhere but this is a much better site to keep an eye on it all.

I still find it odd that the same info and access to the documents are not reflected on the SANParks website. Just seems like the sensible thing to do when you have a section of your website there for it. Particularly when it is there for the other SANPark Parks.
It would also be the ideal place where proof that the project had been signed off and given the go ahead would be placed.

Reply as received from SANParks PR:

A. The main reason why SANParks PR requested the removal of the post by Son godin which was addressed to Jo, is that it showed a layout map of the Nossob camp’s proposed sewer, water and electrical services according to the KTP Addendum Report dated 6 March 2014 to the FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT, issued in October 2012 and not as stated in the post as
Propose plan printed in final EIA BAR report:
and
Layout of new entrance and new chalets north and south of hide
.

It was also detected that additional “Camp maps” were included in the post that does not form part of the KTP Addendum Report dated 6 March 2014 or the FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT, issued in October 2012 .

B. The main reason why SANParks PR requested the removal of the post by Son godin, addressed to Astromatt, to be removed is as a result of the information posted which reads as follows:

All the information is available under SAHRA website. What is strange is that the project have not been approved, but this could just be poor website administration. See link and summary from the SAHRA website (PDF files can be found when opening the link)
as well as the quote from the SAHRA website.

The above is a misinterpretation of information quoted from the South African Heritage Resources Agencies (SAHRA) website which is misleading and incorrect.

The project that is still showing as pending in the quote is a project that was opened as a result of the EIA that was submitted by SANParks to comply with National Heritage Resources Act, No 25 of 1999.

SAHRA will only close their project when all excavation and building projects included in the FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT, issued in October 2012 and the KTP Addendum Report dated 6 March 2014 is signed off by all parties involved.

The projects as stipulated in the FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT, issued in October 2012 and the KTP Addendum Report dated 6 March was indeed authorised by the Integrated Environmental Authorisation Division of the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The following tenders were approved as a result of the above-mentioned authorisation:
CI-NO-0006/2
Upgrade and extension of Nossob and Twee Rivieren Sewer and
Water Infrastructure, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
10-Dec-14 29-Jun-15 2015/2016

CI-NO-0006/3
Upgrading of MV and LV Electrical Reticulation for chalets and campsites, Nossob Rest Camp, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
10-Dec-14 29-Jun-15 2015/2016

CI-NO-0006/1:
Construction of New Chalets, Luxury Camp Site Ablutions & Camp
Site Ablution in Nossob Rest Camp at Kgalagadi Tronsfrontier Park
10-Dec-14 06-Aug-15 2015/2016

C. SANParks management also wishes to submit the following information with reference to the building project at Nossob:

1. The new entrance gate from and to the South of Nossob will be approximately 20 meters south of the current entrance gate. The entrance gate from and to the north will be at the back on the northern side of the camp.

2. The current ablutions will stay operational until the new ablutions are finished. The new ablutions will be built next to the current ablutions. This building area will be fenced in with shade netting to keep it out of sight to visitors.

3. The 10 (ten) new chalets will be erected on the northern side of the camp, which means that unit 8 a/b/c, the shop and reception will possibly be affected. The total area will however be fenced in.

4. The parking area will be slightly moved to the south. The sewer and water systems will also be upgraded.

Kgalagadi management fully understands that such a huge project will have an effect on Nossob visitors and instructed the contractor to minimize any possible disturbance. We apologies beforehand for any inconvenience that might be caused.

I notice that Bitterpan is suddenly completely booked out from 9th to 22 January 2017. I assume that this time is for the "major renovations" mentioned above? Luckily, before SAN Parks closed the camp (one of our favourite camps), we managed to book two nights at Bitterpan for the week prior to the closure.

Anybody knows the status of constructions at Nossob? Works were supposed to start in august 2015 and complete in 14 months. Therefore the new chalets should be available by the end of 2016. When will it be possible to book for them? Thanks.
