Re: Recent sightings KTP

Just got out after 9 days- should have been 10 but had car trouble :0(
The scenery is magnificent- lots of green grass and wildflowers
Lotsof game about but alas for us a paucity of cat sightings- a lone cheetah in all that time
As Jock, the camp attendent at KK noted " the Kalahari is about luck and patience" we had the patience, not the luck
Others we talked to had the same experience; others did not
But I saw no stopped cars on my many drives to and from the camps as well as on morning and sunset drives which tells me that there wasn't stuff that we were missing
Despite that I want to return- perhaps in a less abundant time when the animals are not as dispersed and more dependent on the waterholes
Son Godin- talking about luck- apparently the AWC hangs out at chalet #3- we were in number 1 :0(

Just left the KTP.....very quiet from Urikaruus down to TR. Was woken at 5am with lion roaring from waterhole in front of Urikaruus! Yesturday-cheetah crossing road between Dalkeith and Craig Lockhardt and another cheetah with kill between Lockhardt and Sitzas. Didn't get to Nossob side-short trip-but heard there were a lot of lion sightings around Nossob

We just came back from a wonderful trip to the Kgalagadi!
We camped at Polentswa for 4 days. The handsome old lion was no more.
An impressive young black mane Lion and 2 younger ones form a new group.
We heard but did not see a leopard at night.
At all the waterholes, (Polentswa, Kwang and Nossob and more) were at least 3 - 4 Lanner Falcons trying to catch Namaqua doves or Sandgrouse .
The treat of our Trip was to spot a barking gecko, who did not mind to be photographed !
The next 3 days we camped at Nossob.
(Kaapse reen) Misty rainy weather was a bonus.
We heard a male Lion close to camp and the next day found him at Marie se Draai with two females.
The last day we were at Nossob, just after it rained , I spotted a Violet Woodhoopoe from the hide :D
Good to be back, counting the months to our next trip!

Violet woodhoopoe??? Not common scimitarbill, which is common there.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

Hi all,

we spent 8 nights in the KTP from 12-20 April. It was brilliant! Didn't drive as much as usual as we had a 14 month old with us.

Some sightings & comments:

Twee Rivieren:
Was quiet sightings-wise. Only big cat spotted was a leopard close to Leeuwdril. Some African Wild Cat markers on the sightings board though. No lion or cheetah.

We did see some bat-eared foxes between Samevloeiing and Leeuwdril early one morning.

The southern section was VERY quiet. We saw our first heard of springbok 50km (seriously) from Twee Rivieren. From there on however the sightings more than made up for it

Saw lion at Montrose (1x male), Rooibrak (1x male & 3 ladies -- one with collar) and between Sitzas and Craig Lockhardt.

We also saw the cheetahs Jo mentioned above. Chatted to people who saw cheetah further south in the Auob and had a cheetah hunting steenbok at Kieliekrankie

A glimpse of a spotted hyena at the den site south of Urikaruus.

Cape fox (Charlie??) at Urikaruus next to unit #4.

A lot of springbok and blue wildebeest in the riverbed.

Quiet at the waterholes. Were entertain by the squirrels, meerkats in camp though. Also look out for white-faced owls in a tree about halfway from the camp gate to reception, northern side of the road.

Quiet in camp. Did not hear any lions

A lot of lion sightings up north (almost every waterhole) but note that visibility is difficult due to vegetation.
We saw lion at Kwang, Marie's and Kransbrak.

Cheetah close to Cheleka -- far off in the distance.

And then definitely the highlight of the trip: Leopard in the road between Marie's and Kaspersdraai!
I'll download pics and post on the Leopard forum in due course.

We saw thousands of Gemsbok on the Nossob side -- they easily outnumbered everything else combined.

We saw a lot of raptors, less owls than last time & no Eland. No barking geckos which was quite disappointing. A lot of black backed jackal as you'd expect. No african wild cat.

There are lots of mosquitoes and we had bats in both units at Twee Rivieren. Roads weren't bad -- we saw the grader a couple of times.

I hope this will help? I'll gladly answer some questions if you have.

Dec 2014 - Karoo & Mokala

Another little titbit for anyone interested. There is a spotted Hyena den across from Kamqua waterhole......either that or it's a huge coincidence that there were spotted Hyenas with pups there everytime we passed during our visit from 13 - 20 May :)
