Hi Pitsi,

On your way from Ai/Ais to Mata Mata, Keetmanshoop is the biggest town where you can stock up. Keetmanshoop is 260km from Mata Mata. There are also fully stocked shops at Mata Mata and Nossob where you can buy items. You will also have the luxury to order freshly baked bread and "roosterkoeke" at both these camps.

I hope this info is sufficient.

Regards,
Nadia

Hi,

We are a family of 7 traveling to Kgalagadi in 3 weeks (August) for the first time.
We are staying one night at Twee Riviere, two nights at Xaus and two nights at Rooiputs lodge.
A few questions :
- we can either take 2 LRT Discovery which is ideal roadways but we have to split the group or one 8 seater van like Hyundai H1. Would this last solution be suitable ?
- do we need any specific paper for the cards to stay at Rooiputs lodge ? I guess there is no border crossing is there ?

Thanks for your help

Dear bbinet,

The roads are such that you can make use of either means of travel you wish.

Although the latest information on the forums indicate that you will have to go to Twee Rivieren reception building and have to report at the Botswana customs offices in the building and have your passport with you, I forwarded your question to SANParks PR for the latest information  .

Also remember that your Wildcard is not applicable on the Botswana side. They have their own conservation fees etc. The following prizes were applicable in 2014:

Entry is P20 per person per night.
Camping is P30 per person per night.
Vehicle is P4 per vehicle per day.

Just one question from my side. will you be leaving for home through Botswana or via Kgalagadi?
Always be humble and understanding.

bbinet, the best will be to find out if Rooiputs lodge can arrange transport for you to the lodge from Twee Rivieren. You will require a 4x4 to get there if not, but I can't see that they won't be able to transport you to the Lodge.

To get to Xaus you also need a 4x4 but the lodge can pick you up at Kamqua. In light of this find out if transfers available from both lodges and if possible go for the 8 seater instead of two 4x4's.

Road access to !Xaus Lodge:

The distance from Upington to Tweerivieren is 260km. Travelling time is two-and-a-half to three hours.

From Tweerivieren (entry gate to KTP) to Kamqua picnic site (meeting point for !Xaus Lodge) is 64km. It is a game drive all the way along the Auob river bed and takes approximately one-and-a-half hours. We always meet guests at 2.30pm on their day of arrival at Kamqua Picnic Site.

From Kamqua picnic site to !Xaus Lodge is 30km on a single-track soft sand road through the dunes. A 4×4 vehicle is necessary for this leg of the journey. Travelling time is one to one-and-a-half hours

Self-drive options:

The self-drive to Kamqua picnic site can be done in any standard sedan motor vehicle although a vehicle with good ground clearance is preferable. Guests are met at Kamqua picnic site at 2.30pm on the day of arrival, and escorted to the !Xaus Lodge turnoff at the Rooibrak waterhole. Guests who do not want to take their vehicles over the dunes, park in a demarcated zone off the road behind the dunes for the duration of their stay at !Xaus Lodge and are then transferred to !Xaus Lodge in an open safari vehicle. Guests with 4×4 vehicles, and the ability to drive over sand dunes, may drive to the Lodge, in convoy with the Lodge vehicles. Because the road to the Lodge is a single track, no guests may drive to the Lodge unless in convoy with Lodge vehicles.

Fuel can be purchased at the towns of Askham or Andriesvale (diesel only) or at KTP’s Tweerivieren and Mata Mata.
Tyre pressures should be reduced to 1,6 bar for travelling on gravel roads in the KTP and to 1,4 bar if self-driving through the dunes to !Xaus Lodge.

Transfers:

For guests flying in to Upington, a return road transfer to Kamqua picnic site in KTP is available. From Kamqua, guests are transferred to !Xaus Lodge in an open safari vehicle.
For guests flying to, or wishing to leave their vehicles at Tweerivieren, a return road transfer to !Xaus Lodge is available

Barryels and Son Godin,

Thanks for your help.
My itinerary is :
Joburg - Augrabies
2 nights Augrabies
Then Twee Riv. 1 night
Xaus 2 nights
Rooiputs lodge 2 nights
Obviously between TR and Xaus and also Xaus and Rooiputs I intend to self drive but i guess its ok with the 8 seater ? I would like ideally to drive between Xaus to Nossob River trough Upper Dune Road down to Rooiputs. Will that be OK ?

Yes bbinet it is doable with the 8 seater along the Auob River road, the Upper Dune Road and down the Nossob River road  .

To give you an idea of the road surface here are pictures of:

The Auob River Road.

The Upper Dune Road.

The Nossob River Road was resurfaced down to Twee Rivieren and should be no problem  .

Dear bbinet,

Just some final information on your visit.

You will have to sign in at TR reception at the Botswana immigration office before you will be allowed entrance to Rooiputs and you will have to sign out at the same office before you leave the park. Also remember to have your passports when you sign in.

Please make sure whilst you are still at TR if you can sign out to Rooiputs before your stay at IXAUS, because the above might influence your planned self drive along the top dune road to Rooiputs :hmz: .

Enjoy the trip  .
Always be humble and understanding.

Hi

I know this may be an odd or difficult question, but where can I get hold of a map book of Kgalagadi similar to the map books that you buy in the shops when you are in the park? I stay in Gauteng! Maybe someone in Gauteng going down there soon can bring me a map book and I will then refund you? I need this to start planning my first trip to Kgalagadi.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Mfezi

You know, average travel time is much more important than km but for your information it's around :

Twee Rivieren to Mata Mata :115 km or +/- 3 hours
Twee Rivieren to Nossob : 125 km or +/- 4 hours
Nossob to Mata Mata : 142 km or +/- 4 hours and half

Enjoy

Hi Goronta

Thanks once again for the information. It is really much appreciated.

Why is it that the average travel time more important than the distance?
