Historic picture gallery of KTP camps and places of interest

Unread post by Red Dune » Fri Apr 26, 2013 8:41 am

This could be a very interesting topic . . specially for those of us that has been comming along for a while. There is sure to be a good story and comments that will accompany every pic comming from that old family album somewhere.

Personally I do have, amongst others, a very good aerial pic of the Twee Rivieren camp when they started to build the chalets, of the road between the Molopo and Twee rivieren being tarred . . and the old gate into Namibia at Mata Mata.

I am of opinion however that there are a number of us still struggling to up-load pics with their postings . . . and we just might have to call on Kalahari Guru assist ! ! ?

Comments on this to be appreciated
Twee Rivieren : 2 nights for starters !
Nossob : 11 days from 1st March 2016 ( camping at last again !)
Mata Mata : then 5 nights at Mata Mata

. . . with the red sand in my shoes . . I'll always return

Gosh Myles, it's great to see these
Our first visit to the park was in 1999 and we stayed in the chalet that is now no 7 at Nossob (CH3Z)
Those water tanks behind the chalets were fantastic, divine fresh rain water to drink. I wonder why they removed them when water is such a problem up there now ??
At home...... dreaming of next trip to KTP

I will be following with interest.

Also notice how few trees there are on the Botswana side of the river in the aerial image of Nossob.

Its always nice to read about the good things to come KG . . . and I really think that the
old reception offices would be the perfect venue for the KTP's information centre.

Quite sure that there is going to be a good response from many a Foromite . . . it now
being much easier to have a historical photograph (' from the dusty cuboard '), scanned
at the nearest photographic shop arround the corner, or at the office . . . and it then be
e-mailed to Kalahari Guru for consideration for the information centre as mentioned.

I would recommend however that KG plays his part (? ? ?) and upload the images he receives
via his mailbox mail . . . and with recognition . . . onto this thread as well . . . just to make
it all the more interesting.

Hi,

Here are a few more photos taken in May 2002 when the Kalahari Tented Camp was being constructed.

The photo quality is not great and I've unfortunately lost the negatives

Morning all

If any of your old images you plan to post on this thread require some enhancement, colour balance corrected or just general digital work done to improve them, PM me and we can make arrangements to email to me and I will see what I can do.

This is a very interesting pic of the new chalets being build at Twee Rivieren sometime around 1985, being derived from Colour Library Books Ltd 1987.

It shows the old Twee Rivieren very clearly . . . with a number of the old pre-fab huts in the foreground (which was demolished soon afterwards) making way for the restaurant and a number of new thatched chalets toward the closest corner of the camp.

Note the exit gate at the time . . . on the far side of the petrol depot . . . and with the ' 'thatched columns' as shown in the first pic of this thread.

Go to the trouble to compare this pic with the current Twee Rivieren camp-layout as it appears in ' Read about the camps' within this website.

Historically, drought has always been part of this beautifull semi desert . . . . and as if in biblical times, it appears that we've just ended a 'fat seven year period' . . . and that that a couple of hard years of drought just might be ahead of us.

The attached spectacular photograph tells us the whole story of the arid region in the real sense of the word.

Traces of the road having been in the middle of the river-bed long before this picture was taken, can also be seen.

(pic also from Colour Library Books 1987)
