As far as I know you cannot take a stroll down to the waterhole, so cannot go and setup there. Setting it at your unit would be the only possibility.

Not sure about that Imax, if you could persuade the person looking after the camp to escort you down, then what's stopping you :D

Visited KTC,Urikaruus and Kieliekrankie during May this year and enquired of the camp attendants whether it would be possible to set up a trap camera at the waterholes.

Was told categorically that it was not permissable . :( :(

I was however free to set it up as long as it was attached to the unit I was occupying.

Will be visiting KTP again during November so will follow any official reply to your query with interest.

I have set up camera traps at wilderness camps several times, always asked first ( I also sent an email asking permission to the KTP guru when he worked there), urikaruus is on stilts so plenty of locations to install the trap which won't bother/capture the other residents so shouldn't upset anyone. Grootkolk has the central 'kitchen/entertainment' hut, I have put camera traps around there and my own hut - again I asked permission and I used cable ties so as not to damage anything that didn't belong to me.

as for the watering holes at the bush camps ........ well I have been allowed to fit a camera trap close to the waterhole at one camp and told 'no' at another ( I won't say which camp as I don't want to get anyone in trouble), I was escorted there to place it then again the following day to retrieve it - was unlucky and didn't get any good shots.

all I would say is ask, the response can only be one of two answers. and offer the staff a copy of the pictures for their own research/records it may help grease the wheels so as to allow you the access you require.

I hope you have some luck and hopefully you will have great sightings without the camera traps
my mind and body may be in england my soul is in africa

Dear All,

The answer received from SANParks PR is that no camera traps are allowed to be set up at any waterholes in the park. It is also not allowed to set up camera traps in places that will infringe the privacy of fellow visitors. It is also against park rules and regulations for a camp assistant or guide to accompany you to set up a camera trap.
