All roads to Mabua...?

Unread post by Luikatjie » Fri Feb 14, 2014 12:13 am

We are going to KTP in September 2014 and spending our first 4 nights in Mabua. We will be in three vehicles (obviously 4x4's) travelling from P.E. straight to Mabua. We are thinking of entering Botwana at McCarthys Rest and travelling via Tsabong to Mabua, after spending the night at Springbok Pan as it is very close to Mc Carthys Rest border post However we were wondering if we could (or should) travel as far north as possible in SA and enter Bots at Makopong Border post or beyond. Our questions then are (1) where do we overnight so that we are close to Makopong border post the next morning and (2) is there a ride-able road from Makopong to Mabua gate? We heard that there is a cutline in that area, is that the case? Has anyone travelled this route?
Your advice will be appreciated!

Ok, you can enter at Makopong and then take the cut line via Goa Village to Mabua, This is a two spoor road. The other road is to go back to Werda en then just after Kokotsha take the other cutline. But it is al little bit longer.

The shortes road will be from Tsabong to Mabua and just 10 kilos outside Tsabong is a lodge Berrybush farm, and there is also options for bush camping from Tsabong to Mabua.

Hi Guys

My KTP experiences have never taken me deep into the Botswana side. A friend is proposing a trip all the way to Mabuasehube. He has a hard core 4x4 but I'm in an X-Trial 4x4 softroader. Do you think my X-Trail would make it? I'm mostly worried about the clearance which is only about 190mm....I know the middelmannetjie can be quite high in these parts.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Shfish

I went up to Botswana in 2006 to Moremi, Savuti and Chobe with my Nissan X-Trail and even though I got back without having any breakdowns I think we were just lucky.

My X-Trails silencer looked like it had been chromed from all the contact that it made with the middlemannetjies throughout the entire safari. My son in law who travelled behind me regularly warned me when the rear silencer came lose due to been pushed up by the middlemannetjie and then I would secure it. The sand in Mabua and Botswana is thick sand and I would not recommend going with an X-Trail. If i knew then what I know now I would of not used the X-Trail for this kind of an adventure.

Hope this advise helps you to make the right decision

Thanks for the advice Garrow. Doesn't look like I'm going to get to Mabua soon - 4x4 hire is quite pricey! :(
