So very sad about Barolong!

We saw Barolong during our recent, 8-15 October 2016 at Urikaruus waterhole on Tuesday, 11 October 2016. We were super stoked about the sighting of Barolong.
This was our second ever sighting of a leopard in KTP! Our first ever sighting was of the leopard, CAGN at Houmoed waterhole during 2012 (our first visit to KTP).

Barolong visited the Urikaruus waterhole at 15h00 and 18h00.

The attached photograph is one of many taken of Barolong on Tuesday, 11 October 2016.

The names of the leopards: When my daughter and I first started the ID thread, we used the names that the rangers used(Rooibrak - the massive male seen a lot around Rooibrak waterhole) and mostly named new leopards after the waterholes where they had been seen. When AstroMatt came along towards the end of 2011 and started the Kgalagadi Leopard Project, we both decided that the new leopards would not be named after waterholes, but their names would have an African/KTP flavour/connection. Miera was named after the Mier people in the Kgalagadi, and Barolong after the Barolong tribe. As more new leopards were seen and had to be named, it was decided to use actual African names( eg Itumeleng = Joy,Celebrate, Be happy, Pelo = Heart, Lotlatlana = Dusk, Ontlametse = Protector etc), a lot from the Setswana language. At present we are helping barryels with a Leopard Index for the forum. :hmz: I think it will be a good idea to also include an explanation of each leopard's name on the leopard's specific thread.

(kyknetta - Urinanib's meaning has slipped my mind  , will get back to you on that.)

Dear All,

It is with pleasure to report that the index of all the leopards that was posted in this topic is compiled and can be found HERE  .

I hope that visitors to Kgalagadi will keep posting their leopard sightings in the Kgalagadi Leopard identification topic to enable us to extend the current pictures of individual leopards in the index topics of these beautiful cats for everybody to enjoy :D .

@kyknetta We have also included how the names came about in BLUE in each leopards topic

Kgalagadi leopard identification

Unread post by Afkpuz » Tue Jan 31, 2017 8:52 pm

Good evening all,

i wanted to share my leopard sighting at Urikaruus on 16.1.17 with you.

Around 10pm we heard the first leopard calls coming from the south, coming closer towards Urikaruus with each new one.
Jackals were answering each call and when Dakotah finally arrived at the waterhole around 11pm, they were going mad.
I managed to get some shots of him, drinking and moving below the cabins towards the Wardens tent, before he vanished......

Thanks to Matthew for the confirmation of the ID.

regards,

Denis
