Ruined Red Wine in KTP

Unread post by penolva » Thu Aug 06, 2015 4:51 pm

We have stayed in KTP in winter and in summer. We bought boxes of good red SA wine at the Pick and Pay in Upington. Both times the wine boxes have broken and the bag of wine seems to overheat and tastes terrible. Had to throw around 10 litres away last trip! :? Anyone have good ideas to store the wine. We tried decanting into empty water bottles, tasted horrible. We thought glass bottles would just smash with all the bumping around. Cheers Pen

Our box of 12 bottles in a standard cardboard wine box made the journey from joburg and through the park with no issues :D

As every year so last month too we bought wine at OWK and brought special selection from our own region (Stellenbosch/Franschhoek)
All bottles! wrapped in newspaper and in the original boxes. We never had problems. We once bought a box of wine and that did not make the trip from Upington/Askham to 2R. Although I must admit it was the old road, unpaved.

@Penolva.
The secret to not breaking the bottles when packed in the standard 12 or 6 bottle case,is to keep the cardboard inserts between the bottles and to keep them tightly packed.

Do not throw away the empty bottles after you have enjoyed their contents.
Rather pack the empties back into the box.
This will ensure that there is minimal movement of the precious cargo that remains. :thumbs_up:

Hi , we just got back from Namibia and tried the 'empty bottles' trick and it worked a dream. We also followed Gavin's advice and drank it as quickly as possible :great:
