4x2 vehicle in the Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Park + One day tour ?

Unread post by Minmooz » Fri Mar 31, 2017 7:16 pm

Hello !

We're 3 friends from France and we intent to visit the area on late August but we'll be driving a 4x2 vehicle.

Probably a Toyota Fortuner.

Do you think it's possible for us to drive saflty on the Halfmens Pass, the Akkedis Pass, the Domorogh Pass and the Helskloof Pas with our 4x2 vehicle ? (see the map)
Is there any challenging steep slopes ? :warn:
What's the minimal ground clearance recommended to drive in the Park ?

We plan to do this tour in one day.
We'll be staying at Port Nolloth.
Is it doable or too ambitious ?

Also, we'd like to meet the local people (Nama?) in the evening or early morning.
Maybe in Kuboes or in the area...? If so, what would it be and where/how should we book it ?

Thank you~ :yaya:

Hi Minmooz,

It is always the safest to visit this park with a 4x4 vehicle due to soft sand and rocky terrain with steep inclines.

Are you planning to do the route as a day visitor?

Kind regards,

Hi I have send you a PM with a link to a person based in Porth Nolloth
He is from this area and has and incredible knowledge about plants, the old stories from the Nama people and a 4x4!!
I was lucky to spent a few days in his presence when he was one of the guides showing us all you want to see in Richtersveld and he sure loves to tell you all about it.
can't wait for June 2017 to start with Augrabies 24 2R 25+26 Nossob 27+28 MM 29+30 KK

Of course, but I heard that all the challenging sandy parts were on the pass before De Hoop and Richtersberg and we really don't want to go near there ! :warn:
But the steep inclines worry us because we watched the videos on the Mountain passes of South Africa website and the Akkedis pass seems very twisty, narrow and steep ...

Yes. We want to stay on the west side of the park, starting from Sendelingsdrift in the morning and leaving with the Helskloof pass in the evening.

Hi Minmooz and a warm welcome to the Forum :gflower:

Here's some photos of the road you'll encounter.

As you said some very narrow and there are vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
