Books on Kruger History?

Unread post by Jen » Sat Feb 02, 2008 11:46 am

Dear Boorgatspook

I agree - wish there were more books about the history - I am a Kruger addict so have quite a few.

Kruger National Park - A Visitors Guide
LEO Braak
ISBN 0 86977 733 5
(Copy I have was published in 1988 - may be out of print.)

Kruger Portrait of a National Park
David Paynter with Wilf Nussey
ISBN 0 86954 208 7
(after years of searching eventually found a used copy on Published in 1986.)
Best book I have ever purchased on KNP and well worth the search.

The Kruger National Park - A Social & Political History
Jane Carruthers
ISBN 0 86980 915 6
(Published in 1995 - I am sure it is still readily available)

There is of course the new 3 volume edition KNP History. I placed my order in November & am STILL waiting for them!!!!

Obviously not all SANParks publications but will give insight into KNP history.
Hope this helps :)

I have several books on Kruger and the other National Parks.

Portrait of a national park David Paynter 1986

National Parks of South Africa Bannister,Gordon and Siegfried (Struik) No date but they talk about the Langebaan National Park

The Kruger and other National Parks -Lubuschagne
Da Gama Publishers no date but the Forward is written by B J Vorster the then Prime minister

Skukuza- John Sinclair 1975 Hugh Keartland publishers

But the most prized one I have is
Our South African National Parks Edited by Cononel Stevenson-Hamilton
The book is in English and Afrikaans Published in 1940
The pictures are I think "cigarette card " pictures and are in colour.

We also have a few of the old Brochures of the park .
The prices are quite laughable
eg Admission 10 shillings
Season permit 2 pounds
Life fellowship 50 pounds
Accommodation 5 shillings in a hut
6 shillings if you want an innerspring mattress
Camping 2 shillings

Kruger 16/02 2008 to 2/03 2008 The yellow ribbon is washed and ironed and ready to go :

Can anyone comment upon whether or not the recent three volume history of Kruger, authored by Dr Salomon Joubert, is a worthwhile read and if its approximately R1300-00 price tag represents fair value? I was also wondering if readers of this publication think these volumes add SUBSTANTIALLY to the, by now well trodden, stories of the park's origins and all the colour plates of trees and animals add to or detract from the contribution of the publication? I guess I am afraid to spend that amount and find that the volumes tell me what I and others who are familiar with Kruger history already know, despite the magnificent way in which the volumes are bound and presented in their handsome & matching case Many thanks.

That is one of the best books (set) you can buy. Written from the inside by people who were at the top of the ladder and knew the inner workings.

I wish I had the money ...
