Which SANParks trip should we do?

Unread post by Binkieloo » Mon Mar 07, 2016 2:15 pm

Oh mighty Mites. I am in need of your advice.

Hubby and I, and now a toddler too, are planning our next SANParks trip. We are committed to doing one every year now, but we can't decide what to do.

We did 3 weeks camping in Kruger last year Aug/Sep and loved it. Although we would choose different camps for the toddler this year - if we decide to go that route.

We have also had a 3 week camping trip planned for Addo, Karoo, MZP, Golden Gate planned for more than 4 years (we were going to do it the year we got married but couldn't afford enough time off).

Factors to consider:
We live in Durban - so either of those trips would be a long drive at the beginning and end.
Hubby's parents live on the border of Kruger so it's a good excuse to see them before and after the trip.
Toddler will be 2y4m when we are planning the trip.
We are probably looking between August and October as they are the easiest months for hubby at work.

Any suggestions, experiences etc would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Binkieloo

I personally choose Kruger everytime.

September is usually the beginning of spring and most animals are expecting and some even dropping from that time onwards, I think, I am no expert.

So I would probably choose Kruger, and if you were to choose a camp, my best bet would be Skukuza/LS as they like really large camps and shops are also quite big so you can get almost any supplies needed for you all and the toddler.

Another option is Kgalagadi. It is still in my to do list, but going through everyones TR, Its a place worth visiting.

Enjoy Planning.

Hi Binkieloo, :D

I tend to agree with Kallis and go the Kruger option. Skukuza, Satara and Lower Sabie are very child friendly camps. My experience of travelling with very young children has been to go with lots of lawn, short drives, swimming pool and possibly jungle gyms.

We usually tend to prefer the northern half of Kruger so are thinking Satara, Letaba, Shingwedzi (maybe) and Sukuza. Lower Sabie was lovely (stayed one night our last trip, but it's usually hard to get a camping spot in.

I'm also thinking we stick to Kruger until Kyle is a bit bigger and will appreciate the smaller/lesser sightings of the other interesting camps.

KTP is on the list. But that's a VERY long drive from Durban and will have to wait until K is better in the car.

Certainly, Letaba is a super child friendly camp. 8) Good luck with your planning and travelling.
