WFG, well-constructed variation, with a strong message. I suspect even Paul Simon would approve.

Vulture Week 19-27 November 2016

This week is Vulture Week (19-26 Nov). I'm not 100% sure who started the initiative, but it prompted me to write something on this species that is so critical for the ecological systems. Most vulture species are endangered, not just in S.A, but worldwide.

The Cinderellas of the Bushveld

Imagine no cleaning machine for the bush
No Municipal refuse pick-up once a week
All dead animals lie – just where they died
What a ghastly sight!
Not even to think about the pungent stench
Strong enough to knock you off a bench

Anthrax, Rabies and various other diseases
Spread quicker than wildfire
The Situation so dire

But wait!
There is this really great group of birds
Slowly getting pushed off the grid,
That cleans up and stop this mess
Most are bald so that blood don’t clot their feathers
And they smell a carcass from over yonder
Quickly they clean up the bush
Flesh devoured in no time, bones crushed
It should make you to ponder
The important role of vultures
They’re all endangered, some more than others

If we don’t act now
The scenario above might be our future
You might get me out of the bush, but you won't get the bush out of me, it's deep in my heart

Thanks Mischief :D :gflower:

This one below is more a fun africanised version of "A first day of Christmas". I wrote it a few years ago, but I edited it slightly now. :D

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me
A Guinea fowl in a knob-thorn tree
Two paradise fly-catchers dancing in the wind
Three braais under the starry african skies
Four calling fish eagles
Five golden lions roaring
Six Woodland Kingfishers chirrrrping
Seven elephants trumpeting underneath magnificent baobab trees
Eight Pride-of-de-Kaap so fiery
Nine Zulus dancing
Ten thundershowers and beautiful rainbows
Eleven giraffes browsing through the woodlands
Twelve spectacular sunsets

You might get me out of the bush, but you won't get the bush out of me, it's deep in my heart

I wrote this short Afrikaans piece last night. I did translate it also for our non-Afrikaans friends. :D

saggies val die stukkies blou uit die hemele uit,
deurdrenk die warmgebakte grond,
die paddas sing dat die berge antwoord gee,
en 'n paar dae later
ontplof die veld in al die skakerings van groen denkbaar.

softly pieces of blue fall from the heavens
drench the hotly baked earth
the frogs sing, the mountains answer their serenading
a few days later
the veld explodes in all shades of green imaginable.
You might get me out of the bush, but you won't get the bush out of me, it's deep in my heart

The man in the moon

The man in the moon
sat in the sky so bright
and the moon so full.
That which causes it to shine
then moves into the shadow
and attempts to steal the glory
only for no one to win
because the man in the moon
kick the sun out the picture soon
You might get me out of the bush, but you won't get the bush out of me, it's deep in my heart

Lovely, Wildflowergirl; the first as gentle as the rain itself and the second a clever twist full of fun.  Came just at the right time to put me in the mood as I'm off to the bush tomorrow  Thanks!

WFG, it's wonderful that you are so poetically creative. I enjoy your imagery and how you put things together. The short rain-on-baked-earth poem relates the effect on life tersely, and I had a good laugh about the African Xmas. The moon poem has interesting ideas, but I'm still trying to work out what the whole thing means to me.

Overall, fantastic job.     (Which may just inspire me to get back to my own poetry, which was quite prolific a few years ago.)
