Would you rather not get a glimpse of a spider, scorpion, bat or a snake in your hut?

Unread post by Grantmissy » Tue Jul 11, 2017 8:56 am

Some have no fear of anything crawling or wiggling or slithering or trying to nest in one’s hair. The chance of being bitten or stung by any of those in any of the SA National Parks is small - provided a visitor is alert, sensible and follow the rules.

But … some are still a bit cautious of anything crawling or wiggling or slithering or flying about especially in the hut or cottage where one stays for the night.

For some reason some people have a kind of natural fear of snakes. I would rather or most definitely not spend the night in my Kruger hut with a snake slithering about. Spiders, bats and scorpions are perfectly fine - they do not bother me at all even if they are all in the hut or Rondawel and I will help them safely back to the outside. I enjoy watching them especially spiders.

Is there anyone else who prefer to rather not have a spider, scorpion, bat or a snake in their hut, tent or cottage and which one should rather stay outside?

If the snake was a harmless one I wouldn't mind sharing my hut, but I'd draw the line at my bed . . . . Spiders are welcome, (not by the friend I go with though !)bats I don't mind except that they tend to keep me awake. I think scorpions are the no-no for me, don't want to have to shake out my shoes every time I put them on, or feel unable to walk about bare-foot.

Bats and 6 legged creatures are fine.

Although I have a morbid fascination for spiders and snakes, I prefer to observe them in the open, not in the confines of my hut!!

Still each to their own!!! :)

I love snakes, but because of the high probability of finding a venomous snake, I'd rather limit my chalet visitors to everything else except snakes.
A couple of baboon spiders would be most welcome, and after a chat I would gladly escort them back to their homes!

Baboon spiders are stunning creatures Karin 8) :D .

We once had a bat in our room during the night at Pretoriuskop but its presence was harmless. They are often found on the high beams of the thatched roofs in the Kruger accommodation. They are mostly shy and only active at night when most people do not see them. Some belief that bats could become entangled in human hair and removing it is difficult. Some folklore even asserts that the bat will then stay until driven out by thunder and lightning. Imagine  . I think it is possible for a bat get into a person's hair by accident but it is because of their nature as they frequently fly low over the heads of people who are walking outside, or sitting outside looking for food and it is not to get deliberately into a person’s hair to forage for insects. They are quire harmless to humans apart from the occasional :slap: when encountering them suddenly.

Personally I would prefer not to share our bungalow with snakes or spiders, probably because of bad experiences with both!
We have had experiences before with bats and just try to coax them outside and they are normally most accommodating.
Scorpions .... Not encountered inside yet, would prefer to keep it that way.
So in summary all the sssssssssssssss's should stay outside 8)

A glimpse would be fine :)
I love them best when they are not in the vicinity of my bed  so I would do my best to my hubby to see to that

I have a sad little tale to tell.

At Shingwedzi Camp in 2014, we were in one of the "A" units.

I had just been to use the ensuite, and was settling back down into my cosy bed, when I heard a loud "Ping"!

I couldn't see anything, so turned over and went to sleep.

The next morning we found a poor little dead bat under the ceiling fan.

RIP little bat!!! :gflower:

I must admit....
Only I belong in my tent or hut...I am not happy to share my space with anything creepy or slithering
The snakes and creepy crawlies belong outside my tent or hut...then I am in their space and I always respect that

To be honest I could probably tolerate the spiders, but prefer not to share my sleeping space

I have learned to get used to the presence of Bats in huts in KNP, but that really is that! No Scorpions, Snakes, Spiders, or any other slithering creatures would be welcome! I would prefer them outside! :D

Many people are snake sensitive especially when they are visible. A torch or lantern is a must in the Kruger National Park at night as some snakes are nocturnal and they could cause a nasty scare :slap: if suddenly seen. Baboons and monkeys are also very afraid of snakes and for that reason some Kruger visitors put plastic snakes in and around their Rondawel or tent in an attempt to keep the primates away and avoid a big molest caused by them  . But fortunately most snakes are scared of humans too 8) . We once stayed in Tambotie camp and after we have booked in and went to our allocated tent a rather large snake was at the entrance of our tent. But as soon as the snake became aware of our presence it darted away like lightening into the bushes and we did not see any snake again during our stay in Tamboti during that visit  .

I would definitely not enjoy sharing my sleeping space with various creepy crawlies. Bats I can handle, as well as things like geckos and lizards. Spiders, snakes scorpions, etc - not so much.

Fortunately I have a hubby who is completely unafraid of anything except venomous snakes (and yes, he tends to know which ones are - usually). He has been my knight (though without the shining armor  ) more than once - catching various critters (frogs, spiders, goggas of various shapes and sizes etc) and gently taking them outside 8)
