Photography at Sable Hide

Unread post by JimS » Mon Oct 07, 2013 8:45 am

My wife and I are both keen photographers and we are spending 16 days in Kruger from the 13th October, staying at several camps including Satara and Letaba. Could anyone tell us is it currently worth spending time at Sable Hide for photography. Secondly, is there water in the Girivana waterhole near Satara, we love spending an afternoon in the shade of the large fig tree at this waterhole.

We prefer sitting by a waterhole or in a hide, rather than driving around and we have 500mm lenses and enjoy bird photography.

JimS, I was last in Kruger in May so can't give you up to date info. Both dams are good for photography, the Sable Dam you can also drive around and park close to the water on the opposite side of the hide.

We have found the Matambeni bird hide near Letaba good for Fish Eagle in flight and small birds in the trees close to the hide.

In April the causeway over the Makhadzi river on the S62 was very productive for a Giant Kingfisher fishing.

And a absolute favourite for us, where we spend many hours and have had wonderful photo ops, is the Sweni Bird hide. (near Satara, on S37)

All the Hides are amazing for photography. At the moment saraf is correct - plenty of water around. Sweni Hide usually delivers and I love Sable too. This year we saw some amazing Elephant action at Sable. It will be in my Trip report but here is one of my favourite pics of Swimming Ellies from the Hide.
