Real Photo OR Not?

Unread postby big5spotter » Sun Feb 26, 2012 8:41 pm

We see those amazing photo of a Leopard in a tree or Lion in the bush, a cheetah on an ant hill, how do we know the photo is real?

I saw a show today about a lion and a leopard doing photo shoots. They get the animals ready they get the perfect spot wait for the perfect light then the handler takes a bit of meat put it in a spot and the leopard climb the tree with the perfect late afternoon sun and they took awesome shots.

Whats so cool about that? Thats the same as Can Hunting

If it was a tame or animals in captivity its not to bad
But i agree
Not my photo ethics
btw, many close-ups of animals in great light are created (lured with food)

bigges example of trying to make a wild image was the first winner of the wildlife photographig competition 2010. a wolf jumping a fence in spain.
after a while the judges found out that it was lured with meat
And disqualified

Ja i mean they create the perfect shot. It was tame animals but they get shot you dream of and they say it was a wild animal in its natural environment.

Not me either. I dont even like editing

I was at the presentation of the Wildlife Photography 2011 show in The Hague
The same discussion
Creating the perfect situation with "tame" animals
The consensus was
At least mention that its a lured animal or in captivity.

Only 1 word for that.

Fraud.

A year or two ago, the person who had won a big international photography competition was later disqualified.
The photo was of a wolf jumping over a fence. It was later discovered that he had somehow staged the shot.

Yep, that is the one Bert already mentioned.

Many of the really great macro photos are 'not real' too. The poor insects and such have been put into the fridge so they go onto low activity.
Not posting much here anymore, but the photo's you can follow here There is plenty there.

There was a big bru-ha-ha here in the UK recently when a BBC produced program narrated by the legendary David Attenborough showed a sequence of a polar bear giving birth and the cubs feeding and getting bigger while in hibernation. The program seemed to suggest it had been filmed in the wild, when it had actually been filmed in a wildlife park in the Netherlands.

I guess if you make clear how and when the photos were shot and if any post production has been used then I have no problem. But it has to be made clear, otherwise it is deceit.

If you are honest up front about it anddon't try to create an environment that is designed to fool people, then it is ok.

My wife and an acquaintance were comparing bird pics and she was quite envious of some of his, (and the other way round) until she heard they had been taken at the World o fBirds, and hers were genuinely opportunistic in SANParks.

Yep. I would say its a fraud. I live on the doorstep of Kruger and I spend hundreds of hours driving around trying to find that one great shot and literally take thousands of pics that never go further than the recycle bin.

All in the chase of that one great picture.
At the end of it all you don't want to go into the grave peacefully and quietly in well preserved body... You want to go sort off skidding in sideways, full of bruises and scratches saying: "Man what a ride!!!"

Baffers, it can be done btw
Dragonflies and such
The trick is to be out there just after/before sunrise
The insects still need to warm up and are "relaxed"

I must say Bert I have "doctored some of my pics" sometimes. But that is limited to cropping and if necesarry I do some light enhancement with the canon digital photo PLUS software if its overexposed due to normal Kruger super bright sun at 12 noon.

However I have never stagged a shot. I wish I could but the elephant outside skukuza didn't like it when I smacked him on the @$$ when he didnt want to move to the waterhole...
