Wide Angle Lens?

Unread postby firefinch » Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:34 pm

Hi All,

I'm looking at getting a new wide angle lens for my canon 60d.

The one Im considering is the canon 10-22mm. My question is if I already have the 17-55mm F2.8, will the 10-22mm offer a big difference?

With the 1.6 crop factor on my 60d, this equates to a 27mm (17-55mm) vs 16mm (10-22m) at the shortest focal length.

I trying to decide if this can justify spedning R8k on the lens. I would like to use the 10-22mm for landscape photography.

thanks!

Do you plan on using a fullframe camera in the future?
The 10-22 is an EF-S lens, so will not fit a 1D for instance.

But the lens is great, super quality. If you go to www.wildlifephotography.nl (Madach's site) you'll find quite a few photos made with that lens.
However he did the lens away, and bought the 17-40 L, which I now also have.
Not posting much here anymore, but the photo's you can follow here There is plenty there.

Hello firefinch;

The Canon 10-22 is outstanding optically... but a very close second, and far more economical ( :D ) is the Sigma 10-20. It's the WA that I use on my 40D, and I'm very happy with it for what it get's used for. If you can find a MkI - that's a better bet than the new MkII...

As for your question - does it make any real difference - Yes it does.

If you think about the Angle of View; at 10mm (16mm equivalent FoV) you're getting 97° whereas with the 17-55; at 17mm ( 27mm equivalent FoV) you're only getting 68°... So, a 42% greater angle-of-view.

Plus, you can get very creative with the 10-20/22 lenses...

The 17-40 is a superb lens also; but is not an alternate for the 10-20/22 for a crop-sensor body. If you want truly WA on a crop-sensor, then the 10-20/22 is the way ahead.

Thanks All.

Thats very helpful. I think I will go for the 10-22mm. I do not planning on getting a full frame camera any time soon.

cheers

I used the Canon 10-22mm USM on my 7D and it provided me with excellent results. True, the Sigma 10-20mm is great value and not much of a difference in image quality.

You won't regret your choice though!

Hey Massimo. Yes I did. Reason? D-3-s
The low-light capability of the D3s was something that made me want to switch for more than a year (of course the AF is also stellar, as is overall IQ of the lenses)...eventually I did it.
