After we had moved in, we went on an afternoon drive to 14th borehole

We saw many newborn springboks and a group of 26 giraffes

Image

Unfortunately it was not possible to get them all in the pic.

On the access road to the camp a hyena was enjoying the evening

Image

Maybe it was the same that came to the waterhole 3 hours later.

While we were still braaing, the power went off. Thus, we enjoyed our first meal with candle- and firelight.

At about 9pm I saw a shadow and turned on the flashlight. A huge male leopard was passing by and disappeared between units 1 and 2. We heard him coughing in the parking lot but when we got there we only saw Charlie Fax disappearing quickly into her den. The leopard had gone behind the camp attendants unit already. There was not even time to grab the camera but we think it must have been Dakotah.

That night the temperatures got down to -3,5 degrees and we nearly froze to death in our beds.

30.09.2013

This morning I tried to download some pics from the trapcam which caused some problems. Thus we left for the morning drive only at 8 am. We drove down to Auchterlonie.

Our first sighting were some willies and springboks.

At Rooibrak two lanner falcons had caught a dove and were busy getting rid oft he feathers

Between Montrose and Batulama a cheetah was busy with her breakfast. I think it might be Lisette. We watched her for about 45 minutes while she was eating

30.09.2013 continued

We continued our drive to Auchterlonie and saw a bateleur, gemsbok, a jackal and close to the picnic spot Elena and her cubs who had just finished their breakfast as well

We stopped at Auchterlonie and admired the view

01.10.2013

This morning we went to Mata Mata. Our first sighting was the cutest hyena

Image

Next was a crimson-breasted shrike struggling with its breakfast

Image

a slender mongoose

Image

At 14th borehole was a white-backed vulture with its young in the nest

Image

North of Dalkeith we saw a very sleepy AWC

Image

Further on to Mata Mata it was very quiet. We only saw the many vultures at vulture alley.

Our plan was to visit the shop in Namibia. We checked at Mata Mata about the procedure and were told just to move into Namibia and ask for permission. This was granted with a smile. We did not need to show our passports at all. The shop was a disappointment though. There was hardly any meat available and only some local farm products on sale at high prices. Thus, with no venison we returned to Mata Mata.

After filling up we returned to Urikaruus.

At Craig Lockhardt a jackal was taking a break

Image

a LBR checked the area

Image

and some vultures came for a drink

Image

This year we did not see as many swallow-tailed bee-eaters as last year, but this one was willing to pose

Image

There were some animals at Dalkeith

Image

Image

Image

We had a very strange sighting here as well – we were approached by two cars with open sunroofs and some children sticking out, sitting on the roof – how stupid was that!
