On a recent early morning visit to LP we were watching a pair of Grey Herons making a nest, the male coming and going, bringing twigs to the nest.

Suddenly a third Grey Heron tried to land on the nest, but the reaction of the two nesting birds forced the third heron to land in the branches infront of the nest. Losing it's balance the heron fell backwards into the water but in the process managed to tangle one foot in the branches.

Hanging upside down with it's head totally submerged at times we thought the heron may drown. We saw a similar incident some years ago where the heron could not escape and died hanging from branches.

Fortunately the heron managed to free the leg, and after much splashing around in the water, flew to a tree to recover.

This snake, possibly a Boomslang ?? was the star of the afternoon show. The snake was about 1.5 metres long, and draped itself on a branch overhanging the entrance to the hide. The snake was content to watch the visitors enter and leave the hide for a considerable time.

Stunning photo of the Heron fly by Jan!

Great series of pictures of the Herons on the nest JimS! I'm so glad the one who fell in the water managed to free his leg!

ChristineS, I don't know Snakes, but it could be a Boomslang. A beautiful Snake, but on a branch overhanging the entrance to the hide?

I wonder how many people saw it? :hmz:

Beautiful pic of the grey heron Jan. So graceful
JimS that heron made a big mistake landing on the nest :naughty: glad he freed his foot from the twig
I wonder how many visitors to the hide were unaware of the snake above their heads. Well spotted Christine
