Sky-The weekend the Lions showed themselves- Sep 2010

Unread post by Sky » Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:43 pm

Hi All
Just returned from a weekend at Satara. So it is time for a quick TR.
We arrived at Satara on thursday evening. On Friday morning we left camp (in the mist) at 6 am and decide to drive North towards Olifants. Just North of the camp we saw a large herd of buffalo. 6 Giraffe cows all with young calves. About 2 km on the road we found 3 lions A male and 2 females.

Image

We were the only car for more than 30 minutes. They were quite far off but eventually crossed the road into the mist

Image

By then a number off cars had arrived and we moved on. three km's later just after the S90 turnoff we saw this.

Image

16 Lions. Females and young cubs. this has never happened to us before. The most lions we were lucky enough to see at once were 14. The youngsters were fooling around. Because of the earlier lions we were once again the only car around. They eventually decided to cross the road but by then we were not alone, but because of the wide open area there was more than enough space for everyone.

Image

Image

We then took the S90 and drove down to Nwanetsi to have breakfast. We still couldn't believe our luck. We took the H6 back to Satara. We will also remeber this weekend for the large number of large Kudu bulls we saw. Unfortunately I didn't take any picture. At Satara we quickly went into the shop and as we got to our car we were very suprised to see Esto (our son) , his wife and baby son waiting for us. They kept all of this secret. Seeing that we live about 400 yards apart, this was no mean feat.

Still waiting for tinypic to upload Will add more pics

More pics of the large pride
Image

Image

One of the youngsters chased the wildebeest but no one else was interested.

Later the morning Girivana en Nsemani were on the menu.
At Nsemani Ellies were out to play

Image

and at girivana it was time to take a bath

Image

There was also a lot of trees blooming

Image

We all got into Esto's car for the afternoon drive. We took the s90 , down the s41 and back on the S100. The temperature reach 42 degrees as we drove down the S41. We saw lots of animals and at the borehole on the s41 2 lions. They weren't close so no pics possible.

What would tomorrow bring. We decided to do the Mananga Trail.

Hi All
Thanks for sharing our weekend. Esto will have to comment on some off this because most of the next pics are his fault

Saturday morning the 2 off us took a early morning drive towards Olifants. We could only book Mananga at 7 so we had an hour to spare. We saw lots of antelope , even reedbuck. I asked Esto if he didn't think we could have a cup of coffee. His reply was that we haven't had a coffe moment yet. Then just after the Timbivati turnoff

Image

There was 4 lions next to the road. They had killed a wildebeest right next to the road

Image

These guys also had their fill by now

Image

We had some coffee while we watched this scene and after that drove back to Satara to go to Mananga.

Wearrived back in Satara after 7 booked 2 vehicles for Mananga and collected the rest of the family. We decided that I would take my vehicle and enter from the S100 and Esto would enter from the S90. The S100 had ellies and lots of general game no cats to anywhere. The first part of Managa was also quiet, a couple of steenbuck and Zebra as well as a large rhino. Before we reached the crossing Esto come from the front and told us to follow him. After a while we found these ladies and their kids.

2 Females and 2 cubs. We spend some time with them and they eventually moved off.

We drove back to crossing and then down to the S41.

Image

We then took the S100 back to camp. my youngest son was just saying that he didn't understand why we rated the S100 so high, when Esto stopped in front of us and pointed towards lions far off into the bush.

Image

This was the 3rd set of lions for the day.

Hi Everyone
Thanks for all the comments.

To Continue

We were watching the far off lions when we realized there were 2 females close by

Image
First one crossed the road and then the other.

Image

I called Esto to come and look at these but he replies that the pride was stalking a herd of wildebeest and zebra. They were still far off. The next moment the herd next to the road took off for no apparent reason

Image

The reason became apparent quite soon

Image

Another lioness was chasing them toward the stalking pride. I took some pics but then a car was in the way. The chasing lioness grabbed a zebras hindfoot but got a kick in reply. There was dust all around. The next minute a lioness from the pride was chasing another zebra in the opposite direction. When the dust had settled all that was left was some hungry lions and no zebra or wildebeest.
Image

Image

We stayed for another hour but nothing happened.
There was some giraffe and waterbuck around and a herd of wildebeest across the little river. Who knows what happened afterwards but is was time for a nap and also time to get out off the blazing sun.

Image

The S100 came up trumps once again An hour on the S100 will show your more animals than 3 days up north

Hi Pumba

This is why Satara is my favourite camp

Mananga works like this.
There are for entry points into Managa. From the Satara - Olifants main road, the S100 , the S90 and the s41 just north of gudzanie dam. You need a high clearance vehicle and they won't let you drive it if it is wet/raining. You can only book at 7am of the day you will be travelling the trail. They allow only a maximum of 6 vehicles on the trail.
once you enter Mananga you may leave your vehicle (staying within 6 metres). They actually encourage you to take your Cadac an breakfast goodies and prepare your breakfast in the bush. You may also leave the road/track within reason. It feels like you are on your own in the middle off the bush. You pay around R500 a day to use the track with a deposit off R100. This is used if they have to come and look for you in case of car troubles.

Hope this helps

Hi Everyone
This was really a dream trip but fortunately it wasn't fished yet.
The afternoon we did Managa again I drove in from the tar road and Esto did the S90 again. We found this kori bustard huffing and puffing

Image

At the crossing we turned left and found this old guy trying to tear pices of a dead hippo.

Image

After a while the lionesses and cubs we saw the morning also arrived, burt before they came close the male growled and they backed off

Esto arrived later and told us to come with him back in the direction of the S90

Image

A young mother and baby and then the big boys presented themselves

Image

We watched them for a while and behind us saw this female tusker with her baby
I quickly turned arround and took a couple of pics of her

Image

Then back to the lions but that will have to wait for the next episode

Hi Everyone Thanks for all the lovely comments. I would have loved to have all of you in the car with us.

After the ellie tusker we returned to the to big boys

They posed for some lovely pictures

They were yawning but I decided to skip those

Then the back one stood and stretched a bit

Image

Then it was cuddling/bonding time

Image

Then yawning again. First one

Image

and then the other

Image

Then the other one stood up and moved about 30 metres away and dropped down

Image
But by now it was time for us to go to Six pm was rushing towards us.

Just before the gates a herd of about 300 buffalos were waiting for us

Image

This was the close to an amazing day. We saw more lions in each of these days than in 2weeks in June/July. Apart from the 2 lions on Friday afternoon the rest were closeup. No binoculars this trip. Sunday on the way out we saw another 4 male lions but by now we were so spoiled and as they were lying down in the long grass I didn't take anymore pics.

Thaks again for sharing this experience with us
