One other amazing thing on one of the walks......following an animal track alongside a dry river bed, and every 50m or so there were determined black rhino markings.....on both sides of the track! Obviously the boundary between 2 territories and a rather hotly contested boundary at that. One scrape mark was about 10m long.

A little later while I was keeping watch (the 1st rifle was talking with the guests) I heard ox-peckers so was on the alert, then a branch breaking....we were near thick bush and lots of tamboti trees.....good black rhino country. I quickly alerted the group and we moved out of the area......an encounter with a grumpy black rhino was not on the agenda!

You really do have to have all your senses (including the sixth and seventh) and keep your wits about you on these walks as well as remaining calm and keeping your guests calm too   .

Practice makes perfect GEJ, and you definitely get enough practice! Even those angry Ellies don't underestimate you!

Indeed no time for any mischief with all those Bush Camps, each with its own experiences, never the same! You definitely live a very interesting life!

Thank you for not forgetting to share all your experiences with us!

I prefer the saying 'practice makes better' as I know I will never be perfect......but I do know what you mean!

Again an apology for long neglect......so difficult to post when I have to be careful of rhino and elephant sightings, and cannot always post about what I am doing either.

But promise to try over the next few days to try to post some catch-up pics at least.

Before I post photos.....what have I been up to while staying quiet? More Nyarhi camps, some Lonely Bull backpack trails, a few bush walks, another couple of Sand River Bush Camps, more of the KNP Orientation courses, and a fair amount of work with ECI visiting rhino carcasses for forensic work. The last involves driving a bakkie with trailer loaded with a John Deere ATV, driving the ATV in the bush if we need to go more than a km or so from the road, and then being protection for the team while they work......and sometimes getting stuck in to help them. And that is all I will say about that work....other than I salute the team and all they do.

My final backpack for last year was not successful......On the first afternoon out, while in an area of small rounded pebbly rocks I lost my footing and crashed forward onto some more rocks.......Could not move for a short while as I was pinned down by my backpack and shock! Managed to get to camp site, and out to the road to be picked up next morning, carrying the backpack all the way. Still not sure how I did it, as it turned out I had damaged a couple of ribs.......the pain was really only allowed to kick in once I was driving home and on my own. Fortunately I was doing it as an observer so the group were able to continue with no problems other than a slightly readjusted schedule after walking out to the road with me for pickup.

Still went to help ECI the following week.......!

I will post pics in no particular order and say something about some of them, others you can just enjoy!

First some wild dogs on the Shongolo Loop on the way home after an Nyarhi camp

Klipspringers at the Kruger Tablets......there were actually 5 of them together, very unusual. But they would not stay still for long and I could only get a pic of 3 together

And a sunset.....
