These are plants that I saw in Kgalagadi in September 2007. Can anyone help with ID?

1. This plant was very common on the sandbanks along the Nossob road.

I would guess that your #1 is in the Asteraceae (daisy family).

A very tentative guess is Lagerra decurrens / Blumea gariepina (one is the new name, and the other old, but I'm not sure which is which :?). Its common name is wolbos.

It occurs along roadsides, which would fit the bill.
