Invasive alien: Prickly pear

Unread post by Senyetse » Fri Nov 30, 2007 9:49 am

On the topic of invaders in Kruger, large areas of Kruger are invaded by alien plants, the worst being the prickly pear. While at university a few years ago we were taken to some of the worst areas around Skukuza while on excursion in KNP. At that time ('97) several hundred thousand hectares of Kruger had been invaded. They were doing trials with cocchineal (insect used in biological control of prickly pears). I wonder what the situation is like now.

Most invader plants originated from the gardens of KNP staff at a time when they were unaware of the danger of alien plants.

I did the camp that was run by the HR's in August "Walking in Kruger with Aliens" and we were taken to areas of Kruger where the prickly pear was a problem, but they seem to be getting it under control with the help of the cocchineal beetle :D
They also took us to Skukuza to see where the beetle is being bred then taken to the affected areas.
Llewelyn Foxcroft is (I think) in charge of this, would love him to tell us how things are going.
