I saw a single one hanging onto the front (so to speak) of a small herd of tssessebe at Tihongonyeni last month. There was a herd of eland there too, not to mention zebra and blue wildebeest all over the place, and buffalo. I should also mention at least 70 Egyptian Geese in the pan (the number was probably at least double that), along with one White Pelican. Also Knob-billed Ducks galore, 47 Ostriches, three Pratincoles, and zillions of less uncommon birds, ranging from all sorts of eagles and vultures to Chestnut-backed Finchlarks. To top it all off the whole plain was covered with Bladder Hibiscus (Hibiscus trionum, Terblansbossie) and a yellow flower I failed to identify.

This lone Lichtenstein was waiting for us on the Voortrekker Road in March 2013. He was grazing with a herd of Impala’s.

Recently bought myself a copy of
Kruger National Park - Questions and Answers by Fourie & Van Der Linde

In the entry on LH, the author says the animals in the holding camp have been translocated to Mozambique.
And the animals outside of the camp will be left to live out their natural lives which was expected to be around 2010.

Can anyone confirm this?

Does anyone know how many are estimated to be in the Kruger?

I have seen numbers quoted (not very recently ) of 30-40 . I have seen one near Punda , the solitray one at Tihongonyeni (although he hasn't been seen recently based on my reading of this forum) , and a small group near Pretoriuskop .

Those are interesting numbers, Highbury, especially considering the years-long breeding programme they had near Pretoriuskop. I have only seen the species twice - a solitary individual in each case - and both times, many years apart, in the Eastern section near Mopani.

Hey everyone,
Saw a lone male on the Voortrekker Road about 5km from Pretoriouskop last week.
Was just wondering if anyone else has seen it and whether it is part of a herd or not.
With their extremely low numbers, it seems a bit sad that this guy was all by himself.
Would be a lonely existance.

Hi leoleopard,

Also saw one on the same spot about a year ago.
He was alone between a few impalas.
