We saw an Aardvark on our trip in nov.2009
It was close to Punda Maria on a nightdrive.

The ranger was so excited we stayed watching the animal for like a few minutes
it was awesome !!

The pics were taken in Marakele - on the Tsessebe Loop. :D

My Mammal Guide states that in winter, these mainly nocturnal animals may start foraging in the late afternoon because on very cold nights termites (their main food source) go very deep underground.

We camped in Bontle for four nights and Friday night was extremely cold - the temperature dropped to -2.6 degrees! At least that was the reading on the temperature gauge when I got up at seven on Saturday morning.

We actually saw two Aardvarks that afternoon. We had just turned into the Tsessebe Loop when I spotted two large pink ears above the grass. "Scrubhare" I said and could not believe my eyes when checking through the binocs! This one disappeared very quickly down a culvert. We sat there for a long time trying to spot it again without success. We drove on, extremely excited and at the same time extremely disappointed for not getting a photograph. Less than a kilometre further - lo and behold - another one, in the open, right next to the road and not bothered about us at all!!

We took dozens of photographs and sat with it for a long time. Only after it crossed the road in front of us and started disappearing into the grass again, two other cars arrived and they did not even seem interested!

Wow naomi c, just found your pics of this magnificent creature.   Doesn't she look like she's walking in high heels!!! :D

We saw one, a large male, last year on a sunset drive out of Crocodile Bridge. It had been caught in a snare on farmland, and fortunately a vet had found it, treated it and the senior ranger was releasing it. You may have seen the pics of the aardvark with a bandage on its nose. What a once in a lifetime sighting that one was. We never did find out if it survived, though.

After decades of searching for the "elusive" one I finally saw my first aardvark!!

Seen Wednesday on the Orpen night drive, on the Rabelais gravel road at around 22:00

I was too overwhelmed to take any decent pictures, and the sighting was only for a few seconds. Almost had a heart attack when I spotted it next to the road. According to the excited guide it was only his second sighting in 5 years!
