He made 3 porcupines scramble from their safety in a pipe under the road and then caught one!! What an amazing sighting it was!!!

Leopard at Lake Panic

Unread post by JimS » Sun Jul 05, 2015 2:33 pm

It's very sad when interaction with humans results in the death of an animal, especially one as iconic as a leopard. So I thought I would just share a couple of images of a leopard I had the luck to photograph at Lake Panic two weeks ago.

What beautiful images, JimS.

I believe a female with two cubs was also sighted there recently.

Fantastic images JimS - am wondering if you were at Lake Panic on one of the same days as us - only 2 weeks back from RSA and spent some time at LP on most of the last 7 days. Our first day down there we were chatting (quietly...I know it asks for Silence) to a man who told us he had seen a Leopard that morning. In great hopes we managed to get there the next day and were extremely lucky to see the female Leopard and watched her stalk a group of Bushbuck - she was not successful on that occasion. A few days later we saw her again but this time with an older cub. I have not got this far in my TR yet but will ask SO to try and see what pics we have and add some to this thread and Jan's LP topic as well

Our 'informant' sat next to us in the corner slots and had a Canon Camera with a 150-500 Sigma lens and we were watching a fishing contest between a Darter and a Grey Heron

HI
Thanks for all your comments on the leopard photos.

With seven billion people on the planet I feel very fortunate to be part of the tiny percentage that has seen a leopard in the wild, and even more fortunate to have some half decent photos on the leopard.

Maybe if I win the lotto one day I may have the chance to photograph a snow leopard, or a humpback whale as the tail comes out of the water.

Carol
We may have met at LP but I use white Canon lenses, would love to see some of your photos, I never saw the leopard cub.

Could someone direct me to the Lake Panic thread, I know that Jan has some great photos posted there.

Hi Jim,

My SO (carolv) asked me to put up some of my images of the Leopard sightings we had at Lake Panic.

This one was taken on 15th June when the adult Leopard tried to go for a Bushbuck:

Image

The next two were taken on 21st June when we saw both the Mother and a youngster (they stayed in the bushes unfortunately):

Richard

Thanks for posting your super leopard images. I never saw the cub. My wife and I are back at Lake Panic in August and September so we have our fingers crossed for more leopard sighting, and hopefully some pics of nesting herons.

"Beauty" Leopard north of Tshokwane

Unread post by mandym » Sun Aug 16, 2015 9:26 pm

I have to put these links to YouTube videos uploaded by an English guy, Steve, who I first met at a lion sighting on the S100 in Satara in July.

Steve spent a total of 8 weeks in Kruger this year and had the privilege of seeing 26 leopards and 26 cheetahs during that time. One of those leopards he spent a total of 9 hours with over a period of several days, and I was lucky enough to spend two and a half hours with her too about 13kms north of Tshokwane. If you don't have time to watch the whole the thing start at 12 mins 40 sec and wait for "the pounce" ........she missed by the way

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_j2yLLeeNw

....oh how I want to fly back!!!

This other video is a compilation of 22 of the other leopards he saw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXz_FYTjoB4

Everyone enjoy them, then go and book that flight!! (I say that though of course most of you are lucky enough to already live in South Africa ... but it sounds better than get in that car and drive  ).

Mandy
P.S. I checked with Steve and he is more than happy for me to share his videos with you all.
