Back from our SA holiday last November. We stayed at a hotel at Magoebaskloof pass near Tzaneen. This was our daily visitor:

Samango Monkeys in Kruger

Unread post by Mafuta B » Fri Nov 26, 2010 8:18 am

Hi guys. I was just wondering when last someone spotted Samango monkeys in Kruger.

We went up to Tzaneen Letsitele area and spotted some int he forest on a hike.
Have there been any sightings of them Kruger and if so when last was that?

I read an article that said they havn't been seen for a long time in Kruger and was wondering if that was still so?

There teritorry is given like this ? Image

And they look like this: Image

At the end of it all you don't want to go into the grave peacefully and quietly in well preserved body... You want to go sort off skidding in sideways, full of bruises and scratches saying: "Man what a ride!!!"

Samangos are considered locally extinct in KNP. It has been many years since any Samango population have been reported in KNP as far as I am aware. There was an effort to re-introduce them many years ago, in the Pafuri area. It was not successful, and the introduced animals have died out or moved out.

KNP is not ideal Samango habitat, so there probably never was a substantial Samango population. At times nomadic animals or small groups may have been present.

They are however abundant areas in the mountainous areas along the escarpment not far from KNP. This is much more suitable habitat for them. They are largely arboreal, much more so than vervets. They don't mind wet environments either.

The last report I heard of them was by n ranger in 1998. Since then dont think there have been any reports of them been spotted.

Did see them myself in KNP in the middle 80's traveling with my parents up cloce to Pafuri pinic spot.

We do see them from time to time at Bridal veil and lone creek waterfalls close to Sabie.

KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

Hi Baffers not sure about the question but your distribution map looks like that of the Vervet monkey and not the Samango Monkey. Somangos dont occur in the Kalahari and Namibia and any dry areas unless ive missed something

My friends and I did the Nyalaland Trail last May and we saw 3 across the Levuvu River (just outside Kruger boundary and near Lanner Gorge)

Saw a group about 20 yrs ago along Nyala Drive too

Just for the record :-

Samango is common in Oribi Gorge.

Samango take the place of Vervet as camp nuisance in Cape Vidal.

Vervet and Samango Monkey

Unread post by Guinea Pig » Tue Jan 22, 2013 8:20 pm

For many years I carried around the notion that the two are easily confused with each other.
In Natal we were alerted by our neighbours one morning that the shy troop of Samango's were in camp. 8)
They certainly resemble each other very fleetingly.

Both photo's made in the same camp.

Wildkyker we have seen a few of them in Magoebaskloof en route to Kruger. NetEk also mentioned Magoebaskloof. We have never seen them in Kruger though. I do not know whether they may be present in the far northern corners of the Kruger National Park or not . It would be interesting to know :hmz:.

Hi Wildkyker,

We visited a park in Natal near St Lucia (not sure whether I can mention the name) way back in 1998.
We saw quite a few of them there back then but would not know whether they are still in the area.

We visited Pafuri Camp last year Sept.
While there, we asked the guide about the Samango Monkeys.
Apparently they were previously seen in the Pafuri area.
Quite a few years ago, however, a flood destroyed a ?Wild Fig (I think that was the tree - not sure anymore) forest that was found adjacent to the Luvuvhu.
And this is where these monkeys came to eat.
Since that's been destroyed - they moved out of the area, and haven't been seen for years.
That's the way I remember the story.
But the bottom line is that they are no longer seen, although they were seen there many years ago.
