How an elephant descends a steep river bank!

Unread postby bondm » Mon Apr 06, 2015 5:38 pm

Hi All,

In November last, we were having breakfast at the Pafuri picnic site, when an elephant appeared out of the bush on the opposite side of the river. I thought that the river bank would be too steep for him to descend, but he suddenly laid down on his side at the top of the bank.
Image
Eventually he started to slide down the bank on his side and as he neared the bottom he got up onto his knees.
Image
When he got to the edge of the water he stood up and walked across the river to our side.
Image
In over 20 years visiting the Kruger Park I have never seen an elephant laid down except when he was dead.
Has anyone else witnessed this type of behaviour?

Thank you.

We were on the Letaba River Bridge in May 2014 and there was a large breeding herd of Elephants crossing the river. A pair of youngsters was coming down the sandy bank, when one of them playfully laid down on his side, trying to entice his companion into some fun, without any success. He tired of the fun after quite some time and and had no trouble getting up.

That must have been amazing to witness.

I once saw a young ellie slip down a steep riverbank, but that was by mistake!! He landed in an embarrasing heap at the water's edge!!

Thiis ellie appears to have thought this manoeuvre through!!!

Well done for capturing it.

Also thanks for the warning................even if an ellie is on the other side of a river up a steep bank..........watch out!!!!

What a super sighting   Very clever elephant, I see he is wearing a tracking collar so maybe somebody knows how clever he is and want to find out more about him or keep a close eye on him. :hmz:
I hate it when the voices in my head go silent.......I never know what they are planning.

So when is old enough to know better supposed to kick in ?

Lovely series of pics bondm and if you don't mind me hijacking your topic I would like to add some pics of ellies that we took of ellies also having fun on a sandbank in Kruger from some years ago.

Thanks everyone for all your kind comments.

Yes Crested Val, the elephant initially did walk straight towards us so we quickly packed up and moved away from the top of the bank. When he reached the middle of the river we were relieved to see him turn and walk towards our side, but further upstream.

After many visits you might think you have seen it all, but then something surprises you.
