Bat, Green House

The Green House Bat (Scotophilus viridis), or previously known as the Lesser Yellow House Bat, is said to be a fairly common species in the lowveld however they are fairly tough to find if one is not using mist nets and harp traps at night to actually capture bats. In South Africa their range spreads from the Lowveld and into the eastern parts of KZN. They utilize hollow mopane's, various other hollow trees as well as the roofs of thatched buildings.

This particular individual I stumbled upon at Mlondozi Picnic site near Lower Sabie in the southern part of the Kruger National Park. It was a rather unexpected sighting due to the fact that, as mentioned above, they are not an easy species to find without the use of capture equipment. One could confuse this species with its relative which also occurs in the area, the Yellow Bellied House Bat (Scotophilus dinganii) however the individual in the photo was lucky enough to have a light brown under belly which immediately confirmed the ID. S.Viridis is also smaller than S.Dinganii. Having said this, S.Viridis can have a yellow under belly and then measurements of the bat in hand would be needed for positive ID.
