Meller's Mongoose

Unread post by Egilio » Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:41 pm

This picture was taken last year in Zambia. I was asked to ID it, but am not 100% sure yet. Any ideas? I'll disclose my ideas later, but don't want to bias here up front.

This looks like Meller's Mongoose (Rhynchogale melleri) to me. Although you say that the pic was taken in Zambia, they do occur in Kruger but are rather rare. It is an exclusively nocturnal animal and up till date very little is known about this species.

Ok, found my book!

Field guide to Kruger mammals - U de V Pienaar et al!

And the clincher: Large grey mongoose..

Not bad macro flash pics for this time of night, if I say so myself!

Thanks Richprins!
Based on the longer and more fluffy black end of the tail, and on the not distinctive dark legs I vote Mellers'.
The Large Grey in your picture has very distinctive dark legs which would've stand out in the picture (although I don't know how big the variation is). And although the tip of the tail of the Large Grey is black, it's only the tip and the it's looks like a very narrow tip. Not fluffy like in the picture I posted or possibly in the picture of the Mellers' you posted.
Also the black starts much higher up in the tail in the picture of the Mellers' you posted, more or less like in the picture of the one I posted.

I've learned a lot about these secretive creaturs! Thanks!

I've been up and down this forum and on google,
but can't come up with an ID. :wall:

Seeing that it is still early night, maybe a large grey mongoose?
Or a Meller's?

Howzit Lionspoon,

99% sure this is a Meller's mongoose, which is quite similar to the White-teailed mongoose.
Its not a large grey mongoose as was mentioned.
LGM dont occur there and they are much bigger (1m or more in length).
I am not 100% sure of Meller's Mongoose distribution but I know they are seen from time to time in a private reserve some 50 or so km from Satara and that's where I've seen mine so I would imagine they would be there too.
