Saw a white lion (male and very white) twice in 1992 about 20 km north of Lower Sabie.

White lion cub near Satara

Unread post by PietSkiet » Mon Nov 03, 2014 7:53 am

I have now seen 3 postings on the Latest Kruger Sightings app of a white lion cub in the Satara area.
Two of them were on the S100 and one on the S41 between the S100 and H6. So all three sightings has been in the same area.
Is there any forumites that knows anything about this cub?

I saw 4 lionesses and 16 cubs of varying ages on S100 this morning. One of the cubs was a white cub.

Hi,

Saw this male lion in a pride of 5 from the H1-4, just south of the junction with the S127 (Timbavati picnic site turn-off) in late November 2014. Not sure if it qualifies as a white lion, but it was certainly very light coloured compared to the remainder of the pride.

Sorry about the poor quality images but it was late morning on a hot and sunny day - not ideal for photography. The photographs are of the same 2 lions from the pride.

The lions themselves were looking for a spot in the shade and eventually settled under some bushes and were then virtually invisible from the road.

Hi All,

What a great thread. When in KNP over the last two weeks of April we managed to see the white lion cubs in the Satara area. There are two cubs, one male and one female. We were lucky enough to spend some time with them over two days. I'll try and upload some pictures once downloaded.

I nicknamed the youngest Snowflake, but that didn't get much recognition from the rest of our travelling party.

Let's hope both of the two cubs make it to adulthood.

Take this as unconfirmed:

The two lion cubs are thought to be from two separate litters due to there being an age difference and thought to have been fathered by a 'blonde' male of the ruling coalition. The hope is that the 'white' gene will continue via either the female and/or male should they reach adulthood.

This Australian Zoologist should get in touch with the White Protection Trust as they'll have all the facts about numbers in the wild etc

I cannot agree with the program promoted in this link above. There should not be unnatural interference by "supplementing the white gene" in natural populations.

Disguised in green credentials, it is again humans interfering in nature.

I am also dead set against various white lion breeding programs in captive situations. It is usually aimed at financial benefit for the people involved and has very little to do with conservation. It is prone to abuse and exploitation.

Too many airy-fairy people also want to insert their own interpretation in to white lions and what they represent.

Keep the white lions in the wild and provide the lion population in general with a healthy and safe ecosystem in which they can do what comes naturally. Enjoy what happens next!
