All of the Antelope! Personal Stories and Advice

Unread post by chop13 » Fri Feb 17, 2017 7:17 pm

Hey Kruger lovers!

First just wanna give a shout out to you awesome people for the love given to this great place.

In September I will travel to the park for the umpteenth time, and this time I am really interested in finding the rare, cool antelope. Particularly Roan, Sable, Hartebeest, and Tsessebe.
Anybody got any school stories with locations attached?

Would love to hear them.
Thanks so much, and keep spreading the love!

Hi Chop13,
Before I reply, please bear in mind that the seasons, and especially the recent rains, will have a influence on distribution of all animals.
Sable. In my experience they are most reliably seen on the S36 from Jones dam upto Talamati bushcamp.
Hartebeest. Last December we saw them every time we we were on the H2-2,Vortreker road, around the Komapiti waterhole.Group of 5.
Tsessebe. Probably the easiest.Letaba to Mopani and Tropic of Capricorn loop.
Roan. Saw them last year just south of Mopani.
Good luck in your searches but remember that Pretoriouskop is a possible for all, except Roan, and don't forget Mountain Reedbuck, around Berg en Dahl.
Cheers,Afriphile.

Hi Chop, I also love the antelope and my wish list is to see each species not only in Kruger, but in other Parks as well.

I have seen Sable twice in the Pretorius Kop area. My one sighting was after devastating fire and there was not too much bush to hide in. I have also had a Tsessebe sighting in that area on the Voortrekker road. When I was there one May, there was seemingly a small group coming down to Shitlehave dam to drink at sunset.

I have had a few Reedbuck sightings close to Lake Panic. They are so shy that the sightings were all rather brief.

From reading trip reports, Talamati seems the best place to see Sable.

I have had lots of Tsessebe sightings in the Mopani area and also close to Punda.

I have seen ?Mountain Rhebok on the S50 when staying at Tzendze.

My Roan sightings have been more around the Punda area. Sadly many Roan in that area were killed by anthrax a few years ago. :(

I have yet to see Eland in Kruger. I have however seen them in Mapungubwe. I have also seen Gemsbok in Mapungubwe.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.
