To give every one some hope of seeing a sable in KNP and that they do exist, here are some pics of a lonely one we saw in Nov 08. On route from Numbi gate towards Berg-en-dal

Here is the sighting GP and I had on the S145 (Talamati towards Orpen). It started with a more or less normal sighting for Kruger, tons of branches and high grass in the way... But, this being a rare sighting you take photos anyway, even if it's a challenge...
Image

Image

Not too shabby considering...
And then total panic! Some are crossing the road, and I'm settled on the wrong side of the car! Now will they all cross, or should I stay on my current side? Well, shoot one through the frontwindow, eventhough you know it's not going to be a great shot...
Image

Nope, more are crossing, throw the beanbag over to the other side, arms getting quite muscular throwing that 3 kilo around the whole time. Move over, position camera, and?
Image

Posing! She's actually posing, waiting for me to get the shot!
Followed by these:

Image

Wait a bit, I want to be on the photo with hubby!

Image

And bit the little one of course. Is he still taking photos? Hope he mails them to us...

Image

Okay little girl, I understand that pose, Click! Yep, you're looking good!

Image

And the last ones cross...

Image

What a sighting! Lets see, maybe if we can reposition the car to there we can get a few shots if they walk towards.. Hang on! What's this?

Image

Oh, yes I missed some of you, so you're coming back? 8)

Image

Yep, look well, I'm still photographing!
Wait for me!!!!

Image

And they are back between the branches and grass again....

Image

122 photos and 34 minutes later the sighting is past. Did you note the total absence of other cars?
Not posting much here anymore, but the photo's you can follow here There is plenty there.

You should be honoured, only a special few people get to see sable, and I don't think I've ever heard of anybody with a sighting quite like that!

A bit of Africana from CUSTOS 1978 - the operation took place in 1977 to move some Sable from the N'washitsumbe breeding camp between Punda and shingwedzi up to Pafuri, as they were overpopulated in the camp, and picking up a skin disease:

Nice, Theuns!

I think that would be about the maximum size for Sable herds in Kruger at the moment.

Elsewhere in Africa is a a different story!

Thanks Richprins! I remember, many years ago, seeing 14 near Pretoriuskop. Most I've seen.

What is the biggest herd of sable you've heard of in Africa?

Our second sable sighting in Kruger in 17 years. Well, to be very accurate, our third, the second was on the same trip now in Sept 2009, but very far off.

Our first sighting was many years ago when I never appreciated just how special it was, and how long it would be before we saw sable again.

We saw a herd of 19 in a dry river bed between Tskokwane and Skukuza, Sept 2009.

We have just come back from Kruger and saw Sable on the S36. First I saw 1 standing, as usual, behind dens bush. On getting closer we saw ± 20 on the left, I couldn’t take enough photos, as we left the heard we struck the jackpot! In the riverbed, drinking water, at eyelevel, and with hooves, tails and horns in the photos. And the twinkle in the eye!

What a brilliant sighting and great pics
I love the one of the drinking Sable that knees like a warthog
Think I have to go up and down the S36, seems to be a very good roar for them...
