Look before exit...

Unread post by Blydeboer » Tue Jul 26, 2016 7:26 pm

My son and I went to Kruger for the day way back in June 2012 to allow Mom to catch up on some overdue work. We started with quite an uneventful morning, driving from Orpen to Nwanetsi picnic spot and then down to the Sweni hide for some sandwiches that Mom packed for us. We first stopped at the lookout before the hide to look at some waterbirds when we heard the baboons making alarm calls downstream. We quickly drove to the low water bridge to see if we could spot anything. It was then that we saw a female lioness coming upstream. We followed her right pass the hide, where people were already inside. When she was far enough away (by our reckoning), we quickly went inside the hide. There we found two men, who said they came in at Kruger Gate hoping to see lion, but so far were unlucky. I asked them if they didn't maybe see the lioness further upstream from the hide, and they asked what lioness? I showed them the picture of the lioness crossing the parking area with their car in the background. They were quite shocked seeing how close they actually were to a lion... Luckily they didn't came out when the lion was crossing the parking area... So, in the words of that guy from Police File from way-way back: "Keep 'em peeled!"

Amazing and this is why one needs to be so careful when exiting a hide, stop have a good look around first!

Wow Blydeboer! How lucky that you saw the Lioness and not just got out of your vehicle to go into the hide! I can just imagine the shock on those two men's faces when you show them the pictures! One really has to keep your eyes peeled when getting out of your vehicle at bird hides and view points where you are allowed to get out!

Fabulous sighting though!
