Rare Antelope in Kruger

Unread post by shortcourse » Wed Jul 19, 2017 11:46 am

Hi all
I have read with interest various guidebooks on Kruger where they have noted the presence of red duiker, suni and grey rhebok. Has anyone had any sightings of these in the park - it would seem that the red duiker and grey rhebok were confined to the South western regions of the park with suni found in the far north? Are they still around - I would suspect that they had a very limited range and make have become locally extinct many years ago!

Also, on the topic of rare antelope, has anyone spotted roan / sable outside of the Pretoriouskop / Mopani / Talamati regions? Again, I have seen reports of sable in the hilly area between Lower Sabie and Satara (think it's the H5 or H10?) but these are very old references so would be interesting to see forumites responses!

Sable are regularly seen near Pretoriouskop, and at the Kruger Tablets area (and many more areas in the south)

Roan can be seen further north usually for Mopani upwards (though someone will post they have seen them further south no doubt!!!)

You can also see Eland, Tssesebe and Lichstensteins Hartebeest from Mopani upwards.

I saw a Suni in 2009 on the Mahonie Loop, and I have heard of other sightings near Punda Maria around 2009-2011.

I can't help with red and grey rhebok.
I long each day for my beloved Kruger!!!!

Hi,

Sable often spotted near the Sabie river/H12 bridge during the drought on the northern bank.
I saw a herd of sable on the S36 about 7 km south of the H7 Orpen to Satara last March, close to the picnic spot....

Enjoy hunting for them!

God bless,

We saw a small herd of Sable, with youngster, near Punda Maria in May this year. When they spotted us spotting them they raced across the road and disappeared into the bush - lovely sighting!

Both sable and roan occur in the Makuleke CNP (i.e. the Limpopo and Luvuvhu river valleys), albeit rarely and singly. Probably strays from Zimbabwe (Gonarezhou).
