mosquito nets and clothes spray Skukuza and Olifants

Unread post by Sandy72 »

good morning everyone, I ask for information regarding Skukuza and Olifants rest camps. In 6 days I will be in Kruger and I wanted to know what the malaria situation is like. where I live in Italy they DO NOT offer preventive prophylaxis so I also wanted to know if in the 2 rest camps there are mosquito nets (GC6D Skukuza and BD3/BD3U Olifants) and if in the shop in Skukuza they sell spray for clothes or for mosquito nets.( I already have skin repellents). Thank you very much to those who answer me, I'm a little worried about malaria :)

Warm welcome to the forum Sandy!

The bungalows all have mosquito netting on the windows and usually also the single door ones, don't think the renovated ones with sliding glass door do but if you make sure the door is closed at all times then it will be fine.
There are no mosquito nets supplied as the thatched roofs are way too high to attach any.
The shops are well supplied with candles, sprays, plug in electric repellents and I have even seen some bracelet types but haven't tried those myself.
Just make sure you apply your repellent especially in the early mornings and at dusk and enjoy your trip and time in the park.

Have you considered taking Doxycycline? It's an antibiotic rather than a specific malaria prophylactic but is cheaper than many prophylactics and is prescribed in the UK as an antimalarial. We have used it on all our Kruger visits.
Best wishes

I have also used doxycycline as an antimalarial prophylactic, as it is also prescribed as such in the US, and have never had a problem with mozzies. One thing to remember about doxy is that it makes your skin more sensitive to sunburn, so be sure to use sunscreen when you're out in the sun.

You will be there in very low malaria risk period. The rains have not yet started.

The mozzies are most active at dusk and dawn. Most insect repellents are adequate. Keep your feet and ankles protected.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic and could have side effects if you are sensitive. It can cause nausea or vomiting. I had a holiday ruined because of these side-effects.

I take Malerone which can be bought from any pharmacy. This is such a low-risk period that sprays and lotions should be enough.

The cooler months do tend to have less mosquitos but Kruger is a Malaria region and therefor one must be careful year round and take precautions.
