Driving from Phalaborwa to Letaba you soon pass 3 koppies, the most well known being Masorini. What rock type are they and how do they form?

They are granite and gneiss.

Granite is an igneous rock formed from melted rock. Gneiss is formed from metamorphised granite.

Hi Hippotragus
Close but not what I'm looking for exactly. :hmz:
Granite and gneiss are general terms for plutonic igneous and metamorphosed granitic rocks. The hills are of a rock that is rather rare in the world and how do the hills form?

Back from the Kruger! The rock is syenite, formed deep in the crust but at lower temperatures than granite formations. This leads to a deficiency of quartz compared to granite. The syenite formed bulbous structures in the crust like laccoliths and have appeared through differential erosion.
