Shingalana's reckless people in Kruger. Apr. '07

we where in Kruger from 27/04/2007 to 30/04/2007, i was shocked at the amount of chameleons that was dead on the road, i wonder how people cant see these wonderful reptiles crossing the roads, and to top it all of on the 29/04/2007 some idiot threw his cigarette but out the window, we where about 17 km before Olifants when we noticed the flames, i immediately stopped our vehicle and we got out, the wind picked up and blew the fire out of control, we them managed again to get it under control and stop it from spreading. i think what made me mad was the amount of cars passing us drinking big bottle's of water whilst we where trying to stop the the fire with the clothing we had in the car, their was two people that made an effort to help us but the rest just stopped and looked and then where on their way. just to think what could have happened if we did not stop, with the wind blowing the way it was the fire could have easily destroyed have of the park. what's more was that we phoned satara and told them about the fire, they sent some of the parks rangers from olifants, but to my surprise they rocked up there with only two, two litres of water........... so now we wonder how do you think you can kill an out of control fire with 4 litres of water.

Hi there everyone!

I would like to share a shocking experience i had in KNP over
Christmas last year!On Christmas day me and my family decided
to go up to Shingwedzi for lunch,on our way there, there were
taxi after taxi speeding past us at least going 80km per hour!
But that's not the worst of it,upon the turn of to the camp's
road there were people next to the river out of their cars
having a braai while there was an elephant in the river! On our
way back to Letaba camp the speeding just continued! At the camp we found a pride of lions in the river and people standing
everywhere! And the one gentlemen was so drunk that he could barely stand on his two feet!Im really sorry as i really
love KNP but will never go over Christmas again! These were
all day visitors to the park!
You only have one life, live it!

Hi shingalana,

Being a smoker myself (unfortunately) .. it disgusts me to hear this. We keep a can in the car filled with a bit of water for this. It's unacceptable what this person did. Thank you for doing what you did ..

Hi and welcome shingalana.

Did you actually SEE someone throw his or her cigarette out of the car?

In my experience it is very difficult for "stompies" to actually start a grass fire, even with wind.

What normally happens is that some idiot decides that the time is ripe for the veld to be burnt, and either starts a little fire or stops and places a lit matchbox under the grass next to the road.

There is a court case on in CT at the moment where a tourist was SEEN flicking a live butt onto the grass on Table
Mountain road. The grass caught fire and another tourist died in the fire.

The witnesses wrote down the reg no and that is how he was caught.

It ia a pity that those who HAVE to smoke are often not only inconsiderate, break the law and are fire hazards, but also give others who are condiserate a bad reputation.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

So, if you see someone tossing their ciggie butt out the window take down the reg number and report them. Take a photo if possible. If a fire starts then person can be tracked down and dealt with.
