Iconic new wilderness trail launched

“Follow in the footsteps of giants.” This was the invitation when the SANParks Honorary Rangers launched “The Kruger Trail”, an iconic new wilderness trail during a ceremony held at SANParks headquarters in Pretoria.

Mr Glenn Phillips, Managing Executive of Kruger National Park, compared the trail with the well-known Apalatian and Inca trails of North and South America. “The Kruger Trail will be on a different level and a cut above the rest. Participants will re-connect to nature on the most basic level. This is something modern man has a deep need for.” He emphasised that the trail would give participants the opportunity to experience many of the cultural and natural highlights of the park which is not normally accessible to the public.

Louis Lemmer, the trail coordinator from SANParks Honorary Rangers Magalies Region, said: "The Kruger Trail is an unsupported backpack trail which will take participants on a journey travelling from Crooks Corner in the far north of Kruger National Park, all the way to the Crocodile River in the far south. We sleep in the bush and source water from natural sources such as rivers and fountains. It is about much more than just travelling the distance. It is a personal journey and a unique opportunity to immerse yourself into one of the last true wilderness areas on the planet.”

The first two trails were auctioned during the launch event and these groups will start the first leg in May 2018. The journey is divided into six legs, which will be completed over a three-year period. Each leg will cover a distance of about 90 kilometres. Top guides have been trained to lead the groups and provide special insight and knowledge.

The Kruger Trail Coordinator, Louis Lemmer, with legendary ranger Louis Olivier. Mr Olivier shared some of his experiences as a ranger in Kruger National Park, including the time he had to crawl into a bush after an injured leopard who had entered a rest camp.
