Edited: Jo's 13th Borehole young female - Khomani

@Jo - Thanx! First another newbie for the list  - the 13th borehole young female, then you found no. 19 on the list, the Union's End female. Brilliant sightings and pix!  ( Last trip we looked and looked, but could only find other spots at Union's End - cheetah and spotted hyena)

KTP Leopard: Khomani

Hi everyone

My next leo was seen south of Urikaruus. We followed her in the morning for about 2km as she walked along the western ridge looking for food. She finally saw 2 BEF's taking in the morning sun next to the road, unfortunatly when the BEF's saw us driving toward them they ran up the hill straight into he female leo. She killed one  but the other got away. Lots of action but BEF did not stand a chance.

The pics are not great as she was far away but maybe someone can make the ID?

Edited - IainP's leopard is Khomani

@IainP - Lovely leopard sighting and pix  but poor BEF! :(
:hmz: I think your leo is the same as Jo's 13th borehole Mom. Check the spots on the forehead and above the right eye, also mark on right of nose.
You sure were lucky with leopards on your trip!

Thanks for the feedback, its been fun going through all the posts and i now feel like i know a lot of these leopards through all sightings of the many forumites! :D

The original picture from Sivet would help a bit but I'm completely convinced. I've found that if they are the same leopard then spots fall into place all over the show (kind of obviously!) but if they aren't the same then it is very hard to even find anything that might be a small match.

So my own personal sightings, first I'll start with the 13th Bore hole cub and mum. I was fortunate enough to see them on my second trip to the park on 16th July 2011 at the Rooibrak water hole (is this the 13th Bore hole?). I was in the park with a friend (Garry) on a drive out from TR. We were nearing our turn around point (and i have to admit i was dosing a bit ) when Garry pointed out a cheetah on the right....well it wasn't a cheetah but a female leopard :D

After about 5 minutes of watching, Garry again...and to my shame...pointed out another leopard about 3m the other side of my open window  The leopard, the cub, was lying down eating the remains of a kill (reported by some other people in the park to be a stolen springbok from some cheetahs).
Cub: Miera
Image
We proceeded to watch the two leopards wandering from the trees and pump on the left to the water hole on the right. 30mins of uninterrupted bliss . At times i didn't know where to look as they were on different sides of the car.

Eventually they decided enough was enough and they wandered up the hill...this coincided with the arrival of another car.

We followed them along the ridge for a few 100m but they eventually disappeared.

katydownunder.....again a lovely early morning sighting and with perfect light...lovely. So you saw Khomani, she has been around the Urikaruus area for a long time now and that WH is certainly right in the centre of her range.

@AFRICAT - Thanx for posting! This is Khomani  She was first seen in Jan 2007 with a cub, so she is a quite 'mature' leopardess!
Looking forward to your next post!

Khomani

Unread post by AstroMatt »

Before i forget, this is the sighting that i was sent by Carin Malan last week. The sighting happened on 28/08/2010, approximately 4kms north of Urikaruus. It shows Khomani and Miera. This sighting is 2 months earlier than the one IainP had on p14 (http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=18567&start=195)
It is hard to see much of a change between IainP and Carin's photos (especially when you look at the face) which demonstrates how important these historical sightings are for trying to get the best possible age. So if you have historical sightings that you don't think i have on record do please send them to me using the website.

Incidentally Miera was last seen at Auchterlonie on the 3/4/2013, so she is still doing well :D

I took this Photo of Khomani on 25 Feb 2011. We came across her and Miera. Miera was up in a tree watching her while she stalked and grabbed the Battie. She brought it (still alive) to Miera, who then killed it.
