Bulb: Karoo Iris (moraea polystachya)

Unread post by Kaapsedraai »

Contrasting the rocky-sandy-grass plains on the Rooiplaat loop in the Mountain Zebra National Park was this beautiful purple coloured flower - Karoo Iris (moraea polystachya)

Although pretty, they are dangerous to live-stock, hence animals do not eat them. (Impala lily we find in Kruger is also poisonous to animals).
The interesting fact is that porcupines love them, especially the bulbs as they are immune to its toxins.
