I think the Voortrekker road is one of the best drives in S Kruger and no problem at all for a trailer....you have rare antelope..(Sable, Reedbuck, Lichtensteins Hartebeest, etc) Lots of White ***, and beautiful ship mountain..ja I would definitely go for it if I were in your position

No. And there were quite a few "riffles" in it, but it is in good condition. I had an excellent leopard sighting on it a few days ago.
I don't get to the Parks nearly often enough, despite two trips to the KNP and one to Golden Gate this year.

The Voortrekker Road has always been a bit hit and miss for us, but on the "hit" end of the scale we've seen all the Big five, plus wild dog.

Also, as others have mentioned, you can see Lichtenstein's Hartebeest and it's the only place I've ever seen a caracal/rooikat.

At end of April, I woke a cheetah about 12 km from P/kop and it played in the road for about 10 minutes then trotted away from us and eventually off into the bush.
When we got to Afsaal, the first left turn south of it had wild dogs about 50 metres down, on the road.

We did this road in 2007 with a trailer and had no problems at all. It was very productive (in July) and we saw many Steenbok, White *** and even a Sable, among other general game.

Did it again in 2008 with the same car and trailer and saw ellies close to Pretoriuskop and very little else for the rest of the ride.

So the road was fine for a trailer and imagine that it will be so still.

Hope you have a great trip. Look out for the Scops owl at Afsaal.

Conservation is not an option.
It's imperative.

Leave KNP alone. Go build a hotel someplace else. Reserves are for the preservation of wildlife.

I have just returned from Pretoriuskop, and found the Voortrekker road to have less game than last year, partly due to the heavy rain one night, but improving later on.

Brilliant for wild dog sightings -- saw 2 near Jock of the Bushveld, a pack of 10 closer to Afsaal, and a pack of 7 right at the beginning near Pretoriuskop!

Currently daily sightings of 2 cheetah males around Vervoer Dam, and a single male on the S3 about 5 km before the Phabeni intersection...

Enjoy the Voortrekker road!

Hi, I also enjoy driving this road. That being said, I have only driven the road twice in December '11 for the first time! Very smooth surface. It really looks promising. Only major sighting was a hyena den, but will do it again!

For this reason :D we always make time to take a trip on that road when we are in that region - to remember them . I think it would be great to have a guide or booklet with a short narrative of all the places of interest which will guide a traveler interested in historical Kruger. I would enjoy undertaking such a historical journey from northern Kruger to southern Kruger :) .

Grantmissy, I wish that Harry Wolhuter's "Memories of a Game Ranger" would be republished. It is gold.
Having read his book.. more than a couple of times, the road captures me.

Has anyone been on the Voortrekker Road in the last couple of weeks? If you have, would love to hear the condition and if it is very corrugated? Hoping to use it next week to get down to Berg en Dal to avoid being caught up in the stop/goes in the gorge

Hi SG

We drove it a few days ago and thought it was fine, but not sure what it was like previously.

Certainly there were corrugated sections but not too serious. Did not have any problems.

The Voortrekker Road is one of my favourite roads in the Southern section of Kruger . Not remembered for great sightings as in the ten or so times I have driven this road I can only recall having seen Lion and Sable . I just love the way it flows but I see from recent posts , that I may have to change my opinion as it appears to be heavily corrugated . I am planning a glorious 28 days in Kruger , towards the end of 2017 and my first 5 days will be at Pretoriaskop . This will be followed by a couple of days at Letaba before a week in Shingwedzi . I will be spending this duration up North to try and locate one mammal . The only large mammal in Kruger , I have yet to see ----- Eland . My question however is to do with the Voortrekker Road . One website on the internet to do with mammal numbers in Kruger , states that there is a small number of Eland between Berg-n-Daal and Pretoriaskop , and I wonder if anyone has seen any of these along the H2-2 .

Rottweiller, if you have a read through the topic on Eland you will see that there have been sightings of Eland in the P/kop area but not for some time.

It is my understanding that most of the rarer antelope (other than Sable) decided a while ago, that for them, North is best!!
