Jen, I assume you will be travelling vai the N1 down south?

Then at Colesberg, take the N9 down to Middelburg, from there the N10 all the way through Cradock (stock up here if necessary) and then at Patterson, turn right on the R342 to the Addo Main Gate Entrance.

This will be the shortest and best route, coming from Gauteng.

Sorry, just realised you will first be staying at Camdeboo. Still turn away at Colesberg on the N9 down to Graaff Reinet.

From there, I will take the R63 through Pearston and Somerset East and llink up with the N10 South to Patterson and then turn right onto the R342 to the Addo Main Gate Entrance.

Hi Jen,

I would stick to your route. The R75 is a good enough road, which I have driven many times. You would then turn left onto the R336 (as suggested by you) and go through Kirkwood. I have also driven this road before, and is also in fairly good condition. I would say it would be the quickest route for me.

Kind regards,

Pat

Sorry, I forgot to add, the R336 comes out at a T Junction onto the R342. Turn left and you will enter at the main gate of Addo. It is clearly signposted all the way.

Werner_Patat wrote:No you can only enter the park at the main gate via the bad Motherwell/Addo road or at the Matyholweni gate at Colchester/Sundays River off the N2 highway.

The Addo / Paterson road that goes through the middle of the park are for thoroughfare and exit only and not for entrance to the park.

Is this still correct? Regarding the key of the official map @ http://www.sanparks.org/images/parks/ma ... ea-map.jpg
the yellow bar signage "gate" means "Park Entrance Gate"

I am not an expert on Addo, but when we were last there that was the case. You can only enter near the Main camp, at the top of the park, or from the south at Matyholweni.

Maybe an Addo local can comment.

Yes that is still the case. The side gates only have security staff, so to get your entry permits etc you have to enter either at the main camp or Matyholweni. The side gates can be used as exit points which most people don't realise

Warm welcome to the forum Suinam,
and no, you may not enter or drive around Addo on a motorcycle, there are animals there like Lions and Elephants that would be very dangerous and leave you vulnerable in the extreme.

Hi Suiram; as Elsa said, I am sure you will not be able to enter the game area. You might be able to if you wish to just drive into the main camp. I will ask Frontier PR to confirm if that is possible.

Hi Suiram

You will only be able to enter through the Main Camp entrance gate and drive through to the camp. You will not be able to drive through the game viewing area or any other part of the Park on your motorbike. Once at camp, there are numerous guided game drives to participate in throughout the course of the day, so you can still enjoy everything the park has to offer.

I hope this clarifies and that we'll still see you in the park soon!

Thanks to all for the helpful replies. It's great news that I will be able to ride to the camp without problems, and then make use of guided game drives. I appreciate all your help and hope to see the park in March on a motorcycle trip from the UK.
